Pentagon Used White Phosphorous in Iraq By ROBERT BURNS The Associated Press Tuesday, November 15, 2005; 6:02 PM

WASHINGTON -- Pentagon officials acknowledged Tuesday that U.S. troops used white phosphorous as a weapon against insurgent strongholds during the battle of Fallujah last November. But they denied an Italian television news report that the spontaneously flammable material was used against civilians.

Lt. Col. Barry Venable, a Pentagon spokesman, said that while white phosphorous is most frequently used to mark targets or obscure a position, it was used at times in Fallujah as an incendiary weapon against enemy combatants.

"It was not used against civilians," Venable said.

The spokesman referred reporters to an article in the March-April 2005 edition of the Army's Field Artillery magazine, an official publication, in which veterans of the Fallujah fight spelled out their use of white phosphorous and other weapons. The authors used the shorthand "WP" in referring to white phosphorous.

"WP proved to be an effective and versatile munition," the authors wrote. "We used it for screening missions at two breeches and, later in the fight, as a potent psychological weapon against the insurgents in trench lines and spider holes when we could not get effects on them with HE (high explosive)" munitions.

This is a reaction to a really horible lie posing as a documentary.

This is more of the anti-war left lieing to themselves and others.

The bottom line? *Any* effective weapon is loathed by our enemy, who wants us to stop using it.

This was true in the late 60s when "useful idiots" would call Bell Helicopter all sorts of nasty names. Why? Because Air Cav was effective, so our enemy started a PR campaign to try to get us to stop it's use.

It's no different today.

If we listen to these appeasers, the greatest military on the planet will be reduced to going into battle with spit balls and bra straps.

I, for one, love that the worlds best military goes into battle with every advantage available.

The reason why the terrorists lost in Fallujah is because they can't shoot for shit.

Smart bombs are useless without smart people, and we have those in abundance.

Bush Rocks !

"We should have only fired nerf balls at the terrorists."

Spitballs. What is wrong with these people? Do they hate the U.S. and admire our adversaries? That's not a rhetorical question.

Amazing (4.00 / 3)

We lie to the world and to our people.

We reduce freedom at home.

We use chemical weapons on the Iraqi people - like Saddam did ( with our tacit support ).

We torture the Iraqi people - like Saddam did.

On and on it goes.

Exactly how is Bush different from Saddam now ? Like Saddam, Bush tortured and used chemical weapons on the Iraqi people.

The difference being (none / 1)

that under Saddam's rule Iraq was a stable and prosperous country. Bush has destroyed all of that and they are no more free than they were before, in fact they are less so. We have not made any positive difference.

No that's a white phosphorous burn victim of Fallujah. Does it hurt your eyes?

I hope the trash that "Values Voter" posted gets pulled.

IN effect, he posted this line:

Here's one little terrorist who won't be jihad-ing anytime soon

With a picture of a charred infant. I guess this troll thinks it's funny. I don't.

Don't know if you followed all the answers, so let me sum it up: WP is not smoke. It kills by fire.

A drop of WP exposed to air will spontaniously combust - emerged in water (hard to do in a desert), it will go out. Removed from the water, it will again spontainiously combust.

And it sticks to skin.

In a wet, jungle environment, stick the affected body part in a creek, scrape off the WP, and then remove from water.

If you scraped well, you will not reignite.

In a desert environment, cut off the affected body part (arm, leg...) or you will burn to death.

Scary stuff.

That said, too bad. People die in war. For instance, Iraqi (and other) bad guys hang bombs in trees to maximize american dead.

F'em.

but I notice the left wing blogs are going crazy over this.

But it looks like they're all a year late on this. Washington Post first reported the use of WP in Falluja in November 2004

Year old WashPost article Exerpt:

Some artillery guns fired white phosphorous rounds that create a screen of fire that cannot be extinguished with water. Insurgents reported being attacked with a substance that melted their skin, a reaction consistent with white phosphorous burns.
