Bipartisan proposal would allow Guantanamo prisoners to appeal tribunals

WASHINGTON - A bipartisan group of senators reached a compromise Monday that would allow captives at Guantanamo Bay to appeal the rulings of military tribunals to the federal courts.

Under the agreement, prisoners who receive a punishment of 10 years in prison to death would receive an automatic appeal to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. Lesser sentences would not receive automatic review, but detainees still could petition the court to hear their case.

In addition, the 500 or so prisoners at the U.S. naval base in Cuba would be allowed to challenge in federal court the procedure under which they were labeled an “enemy combatant.”

Besides the fact that this won't pass the House, there won't be enough in either House to override a veto.

"Besides the fact that this won't pass the House, there won't be enough in either House to override a veto."

Let us prayerfully hope so. This has gotten totally out of hand. Imagine what incentive it is providing the goons as they hastly re-write parts of the Internet guides how to avoid a long capture with eventual freedom to come back and kill more infidels.
These morons have not a clue or do they, as how they are setting us up. Have a good one. I gotta try to get some sleep.

Sure hope you're right, Sinkspur--and experience tells me that you usually are.

Some days it almost looks like some of our congresscritters are out to destroy us!

These morons have not a clue or do they, as how they are setting us up.

Are we going to back to the way Clintoon fought the terrorists? As a police action - everything goes into a court room? Kill these bastards instead of putting them into a gulag so that we can turn around and provide them with lawyers. IT IS TRULY SICKENING WHAT THE LAWYERS AND THE ACLU HAS DONE TO THIS COUNTRY!! I would venture a guess their goals have almost been met.

The ACLU must be behind this.

No one else cares.

The GOP has decided since Bush's numbers are down that it is time to turn whole hog against the War on Terror.

WHAT is it gonna take for all Americans to see how insane this is? Those guys in Gitmo WANT TO KILL US. Several who were released from there went right back to doing just that! There must be some reasonable, intelligent Democrats left in this country. How can they support a party which wants to put our very security on a runaway train? WAKE UP! THIS ISN'T JUST POLITICS!

I think that Rush was right on Friday. The rinos have been emboldened by W's weak poll numbers.

It will be overridden. Because everyone up for reelection will hammer Bush.

We need a new Contract for America that all Pubbie candidates should be asked to sign and abide by. And if they won't sign and promise to abide by what they've signed, we should find candidates who will.
