Nursing home keeps spirits up with own pub

DUBLIN (Reuters) - A nursing home in Ireland has hit on a cheering way to keep up the spirits of its elderly patients -- by providing its own pub.

St Mary's Hospital in County Monaghan, near the Irish border with Northern Ireland, believes ready access to a good pint may help its patients -- average age 85 -- actually live longer.

"We would say the whole social aspect of life does extend the years -- it means the patients aren't bored to death," Rose Mooney, assistant director of nursing told Reuters.

The pub, which opens at 11 a.m. and closes at 9 p.m. and charges normal bar prices, had also led to an increase in the number of visitors, she said.

Having its own bar made the hospital, which has around 140 patients, unique in Ireland, she added.

Okay, new retirement plans for me. "Nurse! I need a new colostomy bag, my GOOD artificial leg, and that nice sweater my grandson sent. I'm going clubbing tonight!"

"Don't wait up, I'll be back to the room after 9PM, I'm sure."

I lived in Baytown Texas , when a major plant had an explosion. A local nursing home "opened the bar" I wonder what this Irish homes safety ratio is and if there has been an increase in falls and fights.

I've always wondered how nursing homes/assisted living centers will deal with me & my "cocktail" generation.

I read that awhile back. It lowers your cholesterol. Doesn't it have something to do with the type of barrels they use to process it?

Which brings memories back. Several years ago, my mother needed to be placed in a full care nursing home for the last few days of her life. (Breathing and feeding tubes) I would visit at a minimum of three times a day. Every time I would walk to her room, a little old lady, at least 90, was sitting in the hallway in a wheel chair and would ask as I walked by, "Hey girlie, got a cigarette? or "Honey, slip me a damn smoke." "Hows about you and me going to get a "blanking" cigarette and beer. Sometimes her choice of words were "interesting." The nurses would always say, "Now Edith, that is not nice, or something to placate her, but usually scolding her for asking. To this day, I regret not taking the time to take her outside and give her a cigarette, like at that age what would it have hurt?

They take it all away and retrain you in political correctness.

One not-for-profit I visit gives the residents wine with dinner on Friday night.

Yeah, some of them smoke. They have to go outside, but some do smoke.

This is a nursing home btw, not assisted living.

Gawds, they smoke like fiends at some assisted livings!

I'm in construction and do a lot of work in nursing homes. In the lounge of one they installed flashing multi-color rope lighting on the shelf of crown moulding. All I could think was, "they're getting things ready for my generation".

Do you use lamb for the stew?

I used to like to sometimes float a scoop of vanilla ice cream on my Guinness.

For the ice cream do you use the Guinness straight or do you reduce it?
