RESOURCE: Florida's Concealed Weapon Program
ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- Next time you're out in a crowded place, take a look around. Chances are someone's carrying a handgun and you wouldn't know. Channel 9's Steve Barrett has uncovered just how common concealed weapons are in the places we all go.
It might be in a purse, or a pocket, a car, or a briefcase, and you have no way of knowing. In Central Florida, about one in 40 adults has a permit to pack hidden heat...
... More than 55,000 Central Floridians are licensed to carry a concealed weapon. Orange County has the most, followed by Brevard and Volusia. Orange County has 14,942; Brevard County is next with 11,527; Volusia County has 10,631; Lake County follows with 6,401; Seminole County has 6,330; Osceola County has 3,701; and Flagler County has 1,864.
That worries many people, especially now that Florida law allows the use of deadly force if someone feels their life or property is being threatened. Yet, statistics show violent crime actually decreased with Florida's right to conceal, depending on who you believe, anywhere from seven percent to 40 percent...
...Gun proponents say, while not knowing who's carrying may make some uneasy, it also makes criminals think twice.
Carrying a concealed weapon is considered a right in Florida. The license costs about $100. If you're 21, can shoot and have a clean record, chances are you qualify.

Why THANK you!!! :)
Good questions. The 2nd Amendment of the Constitution guarantees all of us the right to bear arms. So, why do we citizens have to file for a permit? I think it's for two reasons: a source of revenue for the government, and a record of everyone who has a gun. In today's America the Constitution is a document not to be followed, but to be gotten around.
They should come to Alaska. It would be safe to assume that every car carries a firearm, probably a 44 magnum pistol.
I heard that on the Hannity show!
With their home addresses and phone numbers.
As a resident of Central Florida who chooses not to carry or own guns can tell you that this story is misleading... it seems to try to imply that since only 1 in 4 are registered to own a hand gun, that 75% of the people of central florida want to ban guns .... its complete bogus, most people that are like me, who dont own nor carry a gun, we still support legal citizens being armed... and will fight tooth and nail against people who want to take that freedom away. i see people all the time out in public with a concealed hand gun.. its probably not noticeable to the average person, but when i notice someone packing, i normally feel more safe.
The names of all the concealed weapons holders were published on WFTV's website. The 55,000 names encompassed Orange, Osceola, Seminole, Volusia and Brevard Counties (Channel 9's viewing area). After receiving many calls and emails, the station management apparently decided to pull it from their site. The spread sheet listed the names, addresses, dob, sex and race of each CWP holder.
good idea !
The major papers in Fla. should headline: "Everyone in Fla. IS going armed! Crimminals get OUT of Fla. while you can!" Be a real public service.
The benefit to society by allowing non-felonious citizens to possess firearms is summed up in John Lott's well researched first book "More Guns, Less Crime". I'm a Florida resident and although I don't have a concealed-carry permit I do possess a revolver. Florida, as many know, has been ravaged by 8 hurricanes in the last 14 months. One reason we've had no looting or anarchy (a la New Orleans) is that (and I've also been told this by police officers) potential looters are aware that Floridians are ready and able to defend their lives and property. My own community was ravaged by three of these hurricanes. Immediately following each we were literally in darkness - no power, no utilities, no phones, etc. The local police were unable to conduct any patrols. I personally loaded my .38 Special and was prepared to defend myself if necessary. Relative to the subject of your post which is about people who have concealed-carry licenses being mentioned in a news broadcast, I say "so what?" This is part of the state's public reords and domaine information. In fact, I'd prefer that it was known that I had such a permit. The more a criminal element is aware of how many are capable of resisting their criminality the less likely they'll be to attempt to perpetrate crime - especially now that we also have a law that permits us to preempt crime in advance in any life-threatening situation. Of course the anti-gun lobby will try any scare tactic but in the end it won't work. Why? Because as on every occasion when Florida expanded the 2nd Amendment rights to law-abiding citizens violent crime was reduced. Eventually tourists will see that Florida is SAFER. So -- to all you snow-birds I say, "COME ON DOWN.." Incidentally I can tell a personal story about when I lived in a state with the strictest gun-control laws as contrasted with here.
Until you bag one.
The add I LIED.
You should go ahead and obtain a concealed-carry license, even if you don't own, or plan to own, any firearms. Take than 25% and move it up to 75%, and throw it in their faces.
I can understand item #2 (SCOTUS); they're just covering their collective a$$e$, and #3 (Liberals) they can kiss Slick Willy; but Amendment XIX? What does Womens Suffrage and the right to vote have to do with the requirement to file for a permit?
Do you seriously want a convicted child molester having the right to carry a concealed weapon, as he follows your daughter to school?
PS, no gun grabber here. NRA Life Member, two Glocks in .40 and have had a CCW for 35 years.
