SAN DIEGO (AP) - It took a murder charge to put James Cain in touch with the father he'd never met.
Cain, 40, is behind bars awaiting trial for the May 19 shooting death of his ex-girlfriend, Judith Phillips, 57. While preparing his defense, his attorney tracked down Cain's biological father, Mark Walesby, a salesman who lives in Washington. "This is not a crank call," Deputy Public Defender Milly Durovic told Walesby over the telephone in September. "You may or may not know this, but you have a son."
Walesby, 62, said he had a stormy relationship with Cain's mother, but they broke up and she never told him about the pregnancy.
Walesby said he immediately spotted a resemblance between him and Cain when Durovic e-mailed photos of the younger man. A DNA test confirmed he was the father.
"It was a big shock," Walesby said. "It's kinda hard to express, really."
The men met twice in September in a county jail visitors' room.
Cain, a plumber, said during a jailhouse interview that he was "ashamed" and "embarrassed" to meet his biological father while he was incarcerated.
Walesby said he felt a mix of emotions after meeting his son but loves him unconditionally.
"I felt cheated. I never got to take him fishing," Walesby said. "I never got to know him at all."
Both men said they plan to keep in touch.
Cain's trial is scheduled to start Jan. 19.
He was convicted in 1994 of arson and residential burglary in Orange County, according to court documents.
Not exactly a "Leave It to Beaver" story.
Both men said they plan to keep in touch.
----Unless he gets the death penalty. That might put a damper on their "keeping in touch"
The formula is that you divide your age by 2 and add 7.
Therefore:
14 yo m - 14 yo f
20 yo m - 17 yo f
30 yo m - 22 yo f
40 yo m - 27 yo f
50 yo m - 32 yo f
60 yo m - 37 yo f
We need the lyrics for "I'm just a gigalo."
A nice little twist to this story is, James Joseph Cain is my father, whom I have not seen for 17 years and I just found him two days ago on the internet with these headlines---- looks like thanks to all of this I have found my biological grandfather as well...
