For information on the difference between narrative and poetic hebrew see this.

The normal order for a Hebrew narrative sentence is

Conjunction--Verb--Subject--Object.

The order in poetic writing is

Subject--Verb--Object

Simply, and again, Genesis is written as narrative literature in the Hebrew and should be accepted or rejected on its own terms. As part of the law, and, in fact, the foundational book of the Torah, to have thought the Hebrews considered it anything but historical truth would be to indicate they had no basis for their Law. They grammar and syntax of Hebrew poetry and Hebrew narrative are quite different, and Genesis is Hebrew narrative. It was quoted as authoritative by later writers of the Bible and referred to as historical truth by the Lord Jesus Christ. Any other consideration of Genesis requires tearing it out of its historic and literary context.

Based on this statement I would say Catholics have a hard time understanding who is the Author of scripture.

The Bible is a collection of works written under divine inspiration by numerous human authors over many, many years. It is the very beginning of wisdom to learn who a book's author is and what the intended message and audience was before attempting to understand the text.

To simply approach the text as piecemeal nuggets of absolute truth which can be divorced from context and applied as one sees fit is to do a disservice to its meaning.

One can narrate allegories and be poetic when telling history.

This entire thread reminds me when Paul wrote to the Corinthians in order to tell them to stop bickering amongst themselves. Love will overcome all things. I'm a Catholic and disagree with my friend who is Pentecostal, but we like to concentrate on what we have in common.

Whatever the source we can all agree that there is a lot. I think that that we will all be surprised at the judgement day by some things that will happen. I hope to be on the "right" side though.

To treat God's word as simply a piece of literature and put more emphasis on the thoughts and context of the transcriber than the author is to twist its meaning.Far from treating the Bible as piecemeal nuggets a Christian that believes the Bible to be inerrant sees that as only possible because it has been woven together as one continuous non-contradictory story from Genesis to Revelation.

I wonder if it's an English (as in England) spelling of the word. I have seen the word jail spelled gaol in English works before. It is worthy to mention that they do usually put the s in place of a soft c though so maybe so.
