Big Blue releases 3D TV technology (Coming at you for a $1,000)

IBM is set to release 3D television technology which is nearly half the cost of current systems.

3D video has been around for a while, but one of the things that have held it back has been the steep cost. A normal system will set you back at least $1,800 and use two projectors to simulate both left and right views needed to form 3D image.

Big Blue boffins have worked out a way of creating a 3D video system that works with normal DLP (Digital Light Processing) televisions and needs only one projector. It does this by adding lots of frames per second to give giving the image an authentic three dimensional look.

It is a “black box” device which can be connected to any DLP projector or television via the common VESA (Video Experts Standards Association) 3 pin stereo connector.

Currently IBM needs a manufacturing partner to bring the technology to market. Apparently it is compatible with OpenGL and Direct Draw – both software components of the Microsoft Windows operating system.

You still need 3D glasses to correctly view the image and practically no video is shot in 3D yet. But it will be nice when it comes.

I got a buck that says: "The first program producers will be makers of adult material (that's 'porn' if you're not into euphemisms)".

SSSNNNOOORRRREEEE......Call me when the technology DOESN'T need "3D glasses". THEN they'll have something.

Why waste time on 3D? Work round the clock on holographic television where you can move around the room and view different parts of the scene from different angles . Project from the ceiling . You can even walk into the projection and look around .

No it won't. Not for entertainment, but this may have some good technical applications.

It's already big in molecular modelling software where a 3D view is critical. I'll bet that after porn, it'll be big in the video game industry. Just don't look at the screen without the glasses - you will get a migraine!

Once this technology is perfected, porno will be incredible!

They would be better off partnering with a game company, making it a plug in computer part and letting the software developers have a field day with it.

Good repair manuals done up in 3D would be nice. How many times have you seen a photo of a complex piece of machinery that wouldn't benefit from depth? Imagine a Chilton manual in 3D.
