"Chirac has now declared he isn't willing to FIGHT for France"

We're back to Vichy France and Chirac is the new Petain. He'll sell out his country to the fascists (the way the elites did in the 1940's) to avoid having to fight.

"It's over."

First they arrest the police.
Next step on the road to decline: the French version of Abu Ghraib.
Then they'll fire Sarkozy.

Time for those gendarmes to go to Las Vegas for a little R&R, and leave Chirac to figure out how else he might address this. I'd be furious, too. Such a jackass.

backhoe, please "edumacate" me. I understand that 2 "yewts" were electrocuted and then all hell broke loose. But the hell that broke loose appears to be pretty coordinated...who gave the "go" sign? Looking at the French map, outbreaks seem widespread throughout the country. How are these different "cells" (for want of a better word) coordinating with one another? Is France's police system pretty unified as far as training and loyalty or does each "etat" (again, for want of a better word!) have its own peculiarities that might make an overall restoration of order possible? TIA!

Let's not forget that Chirac is the "conservative."

In Europe the labels are reversed and the "conservatives" are the socialist.

Well put, antaresequity. Do you have the graphic that shows the cycle of civilization from birth to death? I think that's how it goes anyway, point being that societies go through a pretty regular cycle and the main difference is just how long it takes for a great civilization to descend to *pfffft*.....

The latest conspiracy theory is that Chirac is being punished for siding with the U.S. against Syria. Iran wants France to butt out of Syria and to stop sheltering Syrians who want to rat on Assad. According to the theory, Iranian-controlled Hezbollah agents organized the rebellion and supplied the rioters with cell-phones, cars, petrol, etc.

FYI on Sarkozy.

Sarkozy is to France as _________ is to the US.

Think I might have studied too much "Intro to Cognitive Psychology" last night...you can reach a point where you start unlearning what you already knew before you started to study.

I think I did that!

Hey HB...I am a behavioral sciences nut.

I think Sarkozy is cut from the Truman/Churchill/Roosevelt(Teddy)/Rudy mold. I hope France looks to him before going to the extreme right (Le Pen).

I can't help but feel that France and Iran - linked - are going to be quickly on everyone's radar.

Just a gut reaction.

So, Chirac has painted himself into a corner by screwing the US at the UN (with the delay on the war, probable collusion with Hussein, Oil for Food, etc.) and by aligning himself with anti-Assad Syrians?

France cannot become an Islamicist State. Who's going to help the French...the UN...bwawawawawawa...no, really, who can help France and who would be willing?

Francoimbicileum

I think rather than a new element, that is a good name for one of those funguses the French like to eat so much...the one that makes them dull-witted and passive.

It's the Frenchest thing - Chirac didn't even come out of hiding until the riots had been going on for over a week, and ever since he has, he's done nothing but make the situation worse. He couldn't wait to get his mug all over the media to gloat about the aftermath of Katrina.

Personally I almost hope the cops just walk off the job and let the Muslims have their way. The French government, and the French people, have shown they're not worthy of any protection at all. They deserve nothing more than to be put to the sword and/or the burqa for the craven, sniveling cowards they are.

Hey HB...I am a behavioral sciences nut.

"Just as I suspected!"

Do ya' think Sarkozy could build enough of a coalition or police force to put an end to this? Sarkozy is the Interior Minister, right?! Would Chirac be so lame and self-centered as to hand France over, so to speak, to the radical protestors? What about French Foreign Minister? Just as lame as Chirac?

I'm sure (I hope) we have contingency plans should this happen widespread in the US

We do. Anyone messes with my car gets their head blown off by my Remington. Any questions?
