Five veterans were arrested and taken to jail Thursday night after ignoring police orders not to touch flags planted by an anti-war group.
The five were charged with criminal trespass after they attempted to pull up the 2,000 white flags in Waterville, Maine's Veterans Memorial Park. The flags represented the 2,000 U.S. soldiers killed in the war in Iraq.
The group Waterville Area Bridges for Peace and Justice called the display an important visual reminder of the lives lost.
Waterville Police Chief John Morris, who is a Vietnam veteran himself, said the group had a legal permit to place the flags in the public park.
The veterans said the flags were planted in "sacred ground."
Morris said, "I spoke to them as a veteran and suggested that legitimate veterans' organizations do not resort to civil disobedience to make their point. I warned them, very carefully, that they were not allowed to do destructive behavior on these flags. If they did, we would have to ask them to leave the park. If they refused to leave the park then we'd have to arrest them, and that's what happened."
The five veterans were booked at police headquarters and released after paying $40 to the bail commissioner.
He stands corrected, and like a gentleman he graciously apologized.
Given you both are veterans, isn't there some kind of code of reverence for each other??....
He says...'Give it a rest'....and you keep piling on.
Awww. :-)
You are most welcome. I don't often talk about my military service here on FR. Usually I am in the science threads. I sure blew it with my first few posts on this thread though.
Way too old to serve in a uniform now. 50ish. But after 9/11 I felt leaving NASA and going back to do what I could for the DOD was the right thing to do. Am still there. :-)
WE all have our moments toots.
take care.
WOW! We missed each other by 3 years. By then I was doing strategic work.
We drilled the battle of the Devil;s den till we all knew it in our sleep. I knew the call ins for every jet box for 20 clicks back towards Fulda.
Its an honor meeting you sir!
You are right, I dont know RA nor do I care. I merely responded to his statements which deserved to be countered.......he should have worn his anti-flame suit if he couldn't stand the heat.
harrasment? Sorry, I merely read thru this thread and responded to his comments as I came across them.......He has already asked me to leave him alone and I have agreed to do so.
Happy Veterans Day!!!
Well, it ppears we have found the "missing link".
Oh... how very french.
No, I responded to each of his posts as I encountered them until I reached the one where he asked for a truce. At that time I respected his request. It is not piling on.....
Why was placing the flags in the memorial park NOT criminal trespass - but removing them is?
Any attorneys out there wanna 'splain this one?
Happy Veterans Day to you too.
I guess that's viewed as "too old" but I firmly believe that old and sneaky beats youth a lot of the time. Experience is important and as a 50ish woman I'm sticking to that story!
But after 9/11 I felt leaving NASA and going back to do what I could for the DOD was the right thing to do. Am still there. :-)
I'm glad you could take such an active roll. Some of us can only contribute as a cheering section for our country. I guess that's important too. (but it doesn't feel like much)
I'd like to see them shot for treason against our war effort and undermining our military.
It is important and it is much IMHO!
Leaving that alone for the moment, this was the essence of civil disobedience.
You commit the act to make a statement. You accept the consequences. You do no violence.
Gandhi would approve.
LOL Make one mistake on a thread...open mouth before turning on the brain...I guess I deserve being flamed.
Sorry all
Ack! No flame here, did you read my post?
If you ask nice the Mod will remove the posts you want. I had to do that not too long ago as I posted something regrettable and hit post before I thought it through. I would have hurt a freepers feelings and the Mod helped me.
I already did. :-)
LOL!!!
Have a quiet, peaceful evening!
