Laughed, but got embarassed. True of course, but harsh in the circumstances.

Riots were always over quickly in the old days. The militia would be called out. The Commander would "read them The Riot Act," and give the crowd 5 minutes to disperse. The Riot Act authorized the use of deadly force to suppress a riot.

After five minutes, shots were fired if necessary and the riot would be over.

Some colonists tried to jail two British officers in Boston for firing on a crowd of rioters. John Quincy Adams defended them, successfully.
