Wassail as I understand covers an old English tradition of dance, drama and music which does involve a drinking vessel called a wassail. I have found some links which seems to support this. As for pronouncing it I have always understood it rhymes with fossil.

"The Wassail Song!
The Wassail Song unlike other Christmas carols does not celebrate the nativity. The Wassail Song celebrates the New Year! "Wassail" is an olde English word for a toast similar to "Good Health" and the wassail is the content of the glass or goblet ( spiced or mulled wine or ale) The author of the lyrics is unknown but the tradition of going wassailing dates back to 12th century England. The composer of the music to the wassail song is also unknown."

My deepest condolences.
He had not opened his eyes all day today and late tonight, as my sister lay in bed beside him and his children on cots next to him, he opened his eyes, looked at each of them, closed his eyes and entered the arms of Jesus. That one beautiful sentence says it all.
God bless and comfort your family.

Some people go through life taking, whining, and throwing those around them into upheaval.
Your brother-in-law went through life giving, loving, and stabilizing the world around him.
"It's almost more than I can bear, but I know he's not in anymore pain." There is a lot of consolation in this.
Now I will pray for those who survive him. Thank you for sharing his life with us.
