WASHINGTON -- Sen. Barack Obama, the U.S. Senate's only black member, criticized another lawmaker from Illinois on Wednesday for published comments on discrimination against young Arabs.
Republican U.S. Rep. Mark Kirk was at an event last weekend at Northwestern University when he was asked about the difficulties of the visa process for immigrants. He was quoted by the Chicago Sun-Times as saying: "I'm OK with discrimination against young Arab males from terrorist-producing states. I'm OK with that."
"I think that when we look at the threat that's out there, young men, between, say, the ages of 18 and 25 from a couple of countries, I believe a certain amount of intense scrutiny should be placed on them," the Highland Park congressman was quoted as saying. "I'm not threatened by people from China. I'm not even threatened by people from Mexico. I just know where the threat is from. It's from a unique place, and I think it's OK to recognize that.''
Obama took issue with the comments.

Mark Kirk represents the 10th Congressional District of Illinois located in the suburbs north of Chicago. Representative Kirk was first elected in 2000 and was re-elected with 69% of the vote in 2002.
Congressman Kirk is a member of the powerful House Appropriations Committee and serves on three of its subcommittees: Foreign Operations, Commerce/Justice/State and Legislative Branch.
Congressman Kirk wrote a number of provisions which became law, including funding for commuter rail, improving veteran's health care, ensuring military voting, and boosting aviation security. Congressional Quarterly named Congressman Kirk as one of the "28 Emerging Leaders in Congress."
Kirk began his career on the staff of his predecessor, Congressman John Porter. He later served in the World Bank, the State Department, the law firm of Baker & McKenzie, and the U.S. House International Relations Committee.
Congressman Kirk is a Naval Reserve intelligence officer who served during conflicts with Iraq, Haiti, and Bosnia. He served four tours at sea and three in Panama. The U.S. Navy named Kirk 'Intelligence Officer of the Year' in 1999 for his combat service in Kosovo. Kirk flew on missions over Iraq and continues to serve one weekend a month in the Pentagon. He is the only member of Congress to serve in Operation Iraqi Freedom and was an air crewman over Iraq during Operation Northern Watch.
Representative Kirk graduated from New Trier High School and attended the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico before earning a B.A. from Cornell. He holds a Masters Degree from the London School of Economics and a law degree from Georgetown.
Congressman Kirk and his wife, Kimberly, live in Highland Park, Illinois.
He explained that during the 1990s, Congress relented to pressure from former envoy Dennis Ross and Secretary of State Madeleine Albright to give the rifles directly to the PA. "Under a veto threat, the Congress relented... Now, imagine how we felt a year later when we saw those -- when we saw Palestinian policemen using those M-16s to shoot Israelis.... And General Ward, do we know where all these M-16s are? Have we done an audit of all the guns we've already given the Palestinian Authority?"
I don't trust anyone named "Obama" to tell me to "trust" young Muslim men from the ME.
And obama promptly did as he was told! Screw him!
Obama is Illinois' biggest phony, other than, of course, Studs Terkel.
I would've said the exact same thing.
Obama can kiss my white suburban Chicago arse!
" Sen. Barack Obama, the U.S. Senate's only black member"
That should read
" Sen. Barack Obama, the U.S. Senate's only black MUSLIM member ".
This is VP material? This guy is only fit to hustle DUIs at the Cook County Courthouse...
There were numerous comments, even a few threads, "outing" Obama as a "stealth" muslim. IMO, they were all pure bs. There are plenty of legitimate reasons to criticize him, there's no need to make new ones up.
Remember when Ted Kennedy was trying to say his name. That is the funniest thing I've ever heard....
Ted: Osama Obama, er Osam, er, hehhe
LOL
I understand he was a competent professor. Which gets him into a select group of tens of thousands as VP material.
Oh, I don't think so.
Ted: Osama Obama, er Osam, er, hehhe [burp!]
Obama is an empty suit.
Obama sounds so much like Osama. Hmmm.
Osama Obama living up to his name.
