When experienced sailors look at each other and say "We're screwed..." it usually means something.

Usually sailors will put on a good show for each other. In addition to being an ego thing, it helps keep morale up just a little bit longer.

The tagline is the last part of a line from a show called "Slings and Arrows", which begins, "Many of you are under the impression that my reason is hanging by a thread. I'm here to tell you that the best stuff happens just before the thread snaps."

We now return you to your regularly scheduled discussion.

That is so true. But everyone knows that look you see (even if you have never seen it before) when you look in the face of someone, and you see...raw fear and uncertainty. Nothing quite like it. I have never been there, but I can imagine the tumult, waves tossing you around, and you see in the beam of a flashlight, someone with a lifejacket, their hair slicked down and water pouring off of their face, teeth somewhat grimaced not wholly by cold and wet, but also by fear.

I am an aviation enthusiast, and there are some things that aviation and sailing have in common...keeping an eye on the weather...having your equipment in tip top shape...training for malfuntions and damage...and most of all, keeping your head squarely on your shoulders in the event of an emergency. Planes in the air and boats on the water will kill you nearly faster than anything if you panic.

"The best stuff happens just before the thread snaps." That is also true of sailing. It sticks in the back of my mind when I'm on a screaming reach that the illegal amount of fun I'm having is going to end when a sheet or halyard blows.

It takes that additional second of thought for one to realize the actual tension device/weapon in the Sword of Damocles is the thread, not the sword.
