I think Sting nominated himself as the 20th century Mozart.

And your favourite 'paper of record' (NYT) declared the Artist Formerly Known as Prince and Now Again Known as Prince as this or last century's Mozart. Roger Kimball referred to this piece of nonsense in one of his essays about the decline of Western culture.

LOL. Although, Mozart was kind of "pop" in his day. It was in Mozart that the Classical era found its greatest composer, right before giving way to Beethoven and the Romantic era.
