CA: Costly advice seen as flawed

Republican political strategists had harsh criticism for Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's campaign team in the wake of a special election that saw all of his measures go down to defeat.

After an election in which five key advisers have already been paid more than $900,000 for their work, they said the governor should now be asking what he got for his money.

"I think the governor would want to audit how the money was spent," said longtime Republican political strategist Ken Khachigian. "Was anybody raising their hand and saying, 'Maybe we shouldn't be doing this?' " As Republicans came to grips with Tuesday's results, some consultants suggested the governor's team should have known better than to take on all of the state's employee unions at once.

Schwarzenegger's spokesman told reporters Wednesday that the decision to move ahead with the special election was that of his boss alone.

In online columns he wrote leading up to the special election, Southern California political consultant Arnold Steinberg has blistered the quality of the governor's political advisers, describing them as "vendors" who "wanted a special election as part of their sinecure - a permanent, financially endowed campaign without purpose or reason."

"These people are making enormous amounts of money, and they're never been held accountable," Steinberg said in an interview with The Bee.

Said University of California, Berkeley political science Professor Bruce Cain: "It seems to be that Arnold, unintentionally or not, has created a whole set of innovative ways where people can make money off him being governor, and a lot of it seems to be around the consultants ... making money off the special election."

Stutzman, who participated in the decision-making process that led to the special election, denied money was a factor.

Yeah, and if we keep it up, folks like Beatty and Reiner will be forced to mortgage their own properties to fight side by side against the evil Republicans.

On to the next battle.

It doesn't make much political sense to propose so many different ballot initiatives that every single one of your opponents is encouraged to show up, when you know your opponents outnumber you. Divide and conquer.

John F. Kennedy said it best: "Victory has a thousand fathers. Defeat is an orphan." When you lose no one wants to be around you. Its the loneliest time in politics.
