Bridgestone paid something close to $80/share for Firestone Tire back in the mid 70s. Firestone was bankrupt, had just recalled several hundred thousand bad tires and couldn't make a true radial tire. Its plants were aging hulks, populated with angry Rubber Workers Union members who would strike at the slightest provocation.
Pirelli also wanted Firestone but Bridgestone out bid the Italians and got this "prize." Pirelli later bought Armstrong Tire, a maker of farm and equipment tires, then sold Armstrong and pulled back to Italy.
When fools want to throw money away, we should let them do it.
