House GOP leaders agreed last night to strip plans to permit oil drilling in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and in the offshore continental shelf from a $54 billion budget-cutting measure, probably securing the votes to pass the bill today.
The move is a blow to President Bush, who has made expanded oil exploration a priority since he took office. Lawmakers said the White House applied pressure yesterday to Republicans to save the drilling provisions, especially in Alaska, even wooing conservative Democrats who have steadfastly opposed the GOP budget package.

" You and Pat Buchanan can get a room together."
I'd be happier if Buchanan put Michael Savage on the bottom of his ticket in 2008.
I'm sorry, but when I see the crap going on in Washington right now(debating steroids, considering excessive profit taxation on gas companies, leaking CIA intel for political gain, passing CAFTA, the Dept. of Homeland Security that can't secure the border, Rovegate, etc...), I just don't think that any of our "leaders" have a clue how to win a war, so what difference does it make who's in there?
Voting for a Republican gets you a socialist. Voting for a Democrat gets you a socialist. At least I'll cast my ballot for the person I want in there, not against the person I don't. What a sad state of affairs...

I am Hillary Rodham Clinton and I approved this message.
It's not just this, Dane. It's many, many things. I have done the research and my reaction isn't "kneejerk" at all. Perhaps you are the one with the "kneejerk" reaction.
Here's a few areas for you to "research": Border security, out of control spending, prescription drug give-a-ways, federalizing airport security, the formation of a huge new federal bureaucracy in response to 9/11, the failure to hold the intelligence community responsible for the shortcomings which lead to 9/11 and other attacks, the failure to push through permanent tax reform, the failure to stabilize and privatize Social (in)Security, allowing Iran, North Korea and others to acquire nuclear technology and advanced missile technology, and the list goes on and on......
Sorry if it rains on your parade, but would the last conservative in Washington please turn off the lights, the party is over.
