GOP to Strike Arctic Drilling From House Bill
The Washington Post ^ | November 10, 2005 | Jonathan Weisman

House GOP leaders agreed last night to strip plans to permit oil drilling in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and in the offshore continental shelf from a $54 billion budget-cutting measure, probably securing the votes to pass the bill today.

The move is a blow to President Bush, who has made expanded oil exploration a priority since he took office. Lawmakers said the White House applied pressure yesterday to Republicans to save the drilling provisions, especially in Alaska, even wooing conservative Democrats who have steadfastly opposed the GOP budget package.

The Dems will lose seats in both houses because GOP voters will re-elect conservatives and elect conservatives to replace rino's and libs.

No real conservative will not vote.

Those who claim to be 'principled' conservatives and stay home on election day are no better than a Hillary Clinton/Ted Kennedy liberal. They are fraud conservatives who allow liberals to take over out of spite.

We win majorities by voting.

We make the majority more conservative by voting out rino's.

Staying home will allow liberals to take over at a time of war.

Any conservative who does that is not only not a conservative but they are un-American to their core.

I never once said stay home. Take part in the primary process in your respective state, target your donations to conservative candidates and not the NRSC or NRCC that endorses and helps with campaign dollars for RINO senators and house members, become involved in organization for which you have a passion and by all means stay in the political process, but also remember that you are a conservative first and anything else second. "It's the PRINCIPLE stupid" that would be my message to the Republican Party at this moment in time.

I agree. Why doesn't Alaska just go ahead and allow the oil companies to come in there and start drilling. Force the communists in the federal government go in there and tell the People of Alaska that their State belongs to Washington instead of Juneau.

I dare them.

"They are fraud conservatives who allow liberals to take over out of spite. "

You don't understand electoral politics. It is almost impossible to defeat incumbent RINOs in primaries, so the choice on election day comes down to a RINO or a full-blown socialist. I won't go for either one.

Have you heard of Pat Toomey?

Right on. I won't vote for a Specter/Collins/Chafee just to hold the majority. The spineless turncoats in the GOP don't take advantage of their majority status anyway, so what's the point of having it?

I am not advocating voting for a RINO incumbent in the primary, but if the loss in the general election of the RINO who wins the primary helps make PELOSI House Majority Leader, then your lack of a vote for the RINO in the general election gave our nation that liberal in charge of the entire House and all the committees.

There is NOTHING of principle in that.

Allow Democrats to get the majority and they vote to cut all funding for our war effort.

Come on! Hastert is in favor of drilling but couldn't get the budget reduction bill passed if it was included.

The Senate's version of the bill passed on the 3rd and when they go to conference there's a very good chance ANWR drilling will be included in the final version sent to the president.

This is no outrage, this is no sellout. ANWR is still alive and The House Of Representatives just reduced the budget!

What's with all the knee-jerk, thoughtless, clueless Republican-bashing around here? You Republican Bashbots need to sign up for a remedial civics class at the Learning Annex!

From NRO:

INERTIA. FATIGUE. PROBLEMS. [Larry Kudlow]

The GOP House leadership continues to struggle over a $50 billion budget-cutting bill. They dropped ANWR in order to pick up some moderate Republican votes and they are desperately reaching out to Blue Dog Democrats. The Senate Finance Committee is marking up only a one-year tax-cut extension, despite the clear fact that the strong economy is based in large part on the huge incentive jolt from capital formation spurred by lower tax rates on dividends and capital gains. Symbolically, Intel just boosted its quarterly cash dividend by 25 percent.

Why Republicans don’t say more about the tax-cut related economic expansion is beyond me. And whether Tuesday’s disappointing election results provide a wake up call for the GOP remains to be seen. But they need a wake up call. Young Turks in the House like Mike Pence, Jeff Flake, and Marsha Blackburn should be represented in the House leadership. Ideas matter. Dick Armey was a great idea man. Speaker Dennis Hastert doesn’t seem to be a great idea man. The Tom DeLay period is probably over. New blood in the leadership is essential.

And speaking of new blood, where exactly is the White House proposal for budget cutting? Last week Bush said he was open to deeper budget cuts. But no new budget-cutting list has so far been unveiled by the OMB. The White House is not using the bully pulpit to lead the effort.

The public is clamoring for exactly this kind of budget (and tax) crusade. A specific budget proposal from the West Wing would be very helpful. The lack of one offers more evidence of Bush fatigue. Failure to provide a specific Social Security reform plan was a key reason for the downfall of this reform. Likewise, failure to publish a specific budget-cutting plan, which could energize the whole congressional process, may lead to the downfall of a significant budget cut this year.

Specific policies will beat inertia. But without specifics, the Democrats will gain more ground simply because the Republicans now running government are failing to meet taxpayer expectations.

This is a real problem. It ain’t going away.

I would go along with your GOP kool-aid drinking if I could think of anything good that's come from Arlen Specter or Olympia Snowe being in the majority.

Some RINO from NH is hamstringing the ANWR drilling, and I should send him back and expect something different?

Turn off Hush and Vanity for a change, and try to think independently. You might surprise yourself.

"Allow Democrats to get the majority and they vote to cut all funding for our war effort."

What war effort? The one where we court martial soldiers for punching a POW? If that's the way the GOP runs a war, we should give up.

I go back Goldwater.

I do not listen to Rush and Sean to tell me how to think.

Although, anyone who slights them as easily as you would must really hate winning.

You are part of the crew that gave us Bill Clinton for eight years.

You are part of the crew that will give us Hillary Clinton for eight more.

Enjoy marginalization.

Al Qaida will love you for it.

You and Pat Buchanan can get a room together.
