U.S., EU Ready to Accept Iran Nuke Program

VIENNA, Austria - The United States and Europe are ready to compromise with Iran over its nuclear program and have tentatively approved a plan that would allow it to make the precursor of enriched uranium, senior officials said Thursday.

The officials said the plan would allow Iran to convert raw uranium into the gas that is spun by centrifuges into enriched uranium. But the actual enrichment would take place in Russia, the officials told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to reveal the strategy.

Depending on its level, enrichment can be used to generate energy or make nuclear weapons. Iran insists it is interested in the technology only to produce power, but the United States and many other countries fear Tehran wants to enrich uranium to weapons-grade levels to use as the fissile core in warheads.

Iran has refused to bow to international demands that it renounce its right to enrichment and related activities and in August resumed uranium conversion. That prompted Britain, France and Germany to break off talks with Tehran meant to dispel fears about its nuclear agenda. It also led a September meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency's 35-nation board to approve a resolution clearing the path for Iran's referral to the U.N. Security Council at a Nov. 24 board meeting.

Seems I remember Iran turning down an enrichment offer from the Russians before.

This is a very bad precedent. The EU has fumbled the ball they asked for and the world will pay dearly for it.

Very bad idea unless we have some sort of proverbial axe hanging over Iran's head permanently.

This is a stupid-ass idea from start to finish. What are these idiots thinking? It's like letting Charlie Manson out of jail and giving him a set of Ginsu's for a going away present.

Isn't this a bit alarming? The world is bowing to a country who has a primary goal of obliterating Israel?

MAD and deterrence worked during the cold war because neither side wanted to be destroyed.

All that's changed now.

Then we'd best destroy them now before the cost gets too high.

It may be that the headline is misleading, too. It makes it sound as though Iran is calling the shots, but it may be that the the U.S. and EU are offering something similar that Iran first accepted and then refused in the past. Iran just announced last week that they wouldn't compromise at all on their nukes.
We'll have to read more reports on this to figure out the real story.

"That would give Washington, Paris, London and Berlin a chance to save diplomatic face after months of saying they would not accept conversion, he indicated."

Bush is dancing the French Surrender Monkey.

Perhaps he should consider just resigning and heading back home Crawford to play cowboys and indians. Iran has all but declared war on us. This is no time to negotiate, or yield to their demands; the cost may measured in a vast number of innocent lives. If you are unable to push your cause then at least have enough fortitude to stand your ground and leave the matter unsettled.

You can't negotiate with terrorists. Any concession is seen as a sign of weakness. Like the Noreth Koreans, the Iranians (read mullahs) will not abide by any agreement.

I regret Iran is not Charlie Manson and not in jail. Looks impossible to prevent Iran from getting nuclear tech. Or Iran will get it without any control.

Then leave it "without any control"; at least then your hands will remain free if revisit the issue at a later date. What is the point of committing yourself to a set of conditions that fall well short of accomplishing your objective? You will just guarantee your diplomatic irrelevance, and institutionalize your failure.

Why doesn't the U.S. and the E.U. jjust simpoly nuke themselves? That seems to be their wish with these negotiations.
