AMA may support broad public smoking ban

Bruce Japsen Published November 3, 2005

Amid increased scrutiny of smoking in restaurants and bars, the American Medical Association is considering backing federal legislation that would prohibit public smoking in a variety of businesses.

The largest U.S. doctors group, representing a quarter-million physicians, is being asked by members to put its lobbying clout behind such federal legislation.

No wonder the AMA's membership numbers are down, between working toward a federal smoking ban and banning guns in homes with children, the AMA leadership is out of touch with the membership.

Quite possibly we should also prohibit the practice of medicine outside of an authorized, official place of medical practice.

Oops. Thanks for pointing that out. I'm tired. It should have read "...wants to ban smoking in all workplaces". Sorry. I'm new and don't know how to edit my post once it has been posted.

When doctors stop "practicing" medicine, and finally get it right,(Zero incidents of malpractice) then I'll consider their proposal.

Now, let's see. Where, oh where, in Article I, Section 8, is Congress granted power to pass such a law? Hmm. I wonder if the AMA expects congress to base such a broad-reaching law on the interstate commerce clause?

Tobacco industry should sponsor a federal law that bans doctors from smoking, because they represent healthcare and should set a good example. The NRA should sponsor a federal law that forbids doctors from owning guns, because they are suppose to save life and should not own implements that take life. Let us see what would happen if the law is implemented. Criminals would target homes of doctors because they know they are unarmed and half the doctors would go bonkers and abuse pills because they no longer have cigarettes to relieve their stress.

The DEA should get behind a federal law making it mandatory for all health care providers to undergo frequent drug (and alcohol) testing.

Better yet, this should be done via an Executive Order.
