1. There was little resistance for the conquests at the time.
2. MAJOR financial interest, mostly because Muslims historically were always heavily involved in long distance economic trade and they wanted a lot of territory where trade could be accomplished with minimal resistance. After all, the prophet Muhammed was a merchant himself for many years; indeed, the Muslim merchants followed the invading Muslim armies almost as fast as the armies could conquer territory.
It's a painful history to face, but the alternative is worse.

Worthwhile reading - ping!
Good outline of the history of Muslim jihad.
One note and an observation: The Byzantine emperor was defeated at Manzikert primarily due to an act of betrayel. One of his commanders refused to come to his aid at a critical moment. Romanus was winning up until this.
The observation is that jihad is alive and well today and not just among the "radical" islamists. It remains one of the five pillars of islam and is a duty of all moslems. And internal discord and defeatism today are as much a threat to the security and well-being of the west as they were back in 1071.

Excellent summary. What's going on now will follow the Israel model - keep violence just at the threshold, demand concessions, raise violence again, demand more concessions until the host country is exhausted.
Israel was the toughest nut to crack. With external pressure they caved and gave up Gaza. That was their sign. Europe will be a cakewalk now.
These people are bullies - the only understand violence and perceive communication and concessions as weakness. And they love an audience which the liberal MSM will never give up. Anyone notice how little attention CNN is paying to the French crisis? How many are aware that only Algerian camera crews are allowed to film the violence ridden areas of France?
G-d help us all.

Good read. It's an oxymoron to expect Muslims and Jews to live side by side in peace. It goes against everything Islam stands for. Unless you are Muslim, jihad is declared and expected by the religion. Nothing has changed since the tenth century.
What's scary is that Iran is developing nuclear weapons and nobody is doing anything to stop them. When they have that capability nothing will stop the jihadists.
We have to remember what their ultimate goal is: World conquest and they will not stop fighting toward that goal.
I believe we really need to take them more seriously and thankfully there are some leaders of ours who do.
Islam was rapidly spread by the sword. This was done by muhammed appealing to mankind basiest desires; pride, plunder and rapine. By their fruit muslims will be known. They are using the same age old tacticts today.

Thanks, I will need to reprint this for the wimps I know.
Let us hope that the nihilism and isolation of jihadist militancy presage the renunciation by faithful Muslims of sacralized violence. Such a turn would free those who call upon the name of the One God from the well-earned stigma of religious brutalityYeah, why shouldn't that work? I mean, the nihilism and isolation has been going on for fourteen centuries, but that doesn't mean it won't work now, right?
