MADISON, Wis. -- An Assembly committee narrowly defeated Tuesday amendments to a bill that would allow Wisconsin residents to carry concealed weapons, including one outlawing guns in day care centers.
The Republican-led Assembly Committee on Criminal Justice and Homeland Security voted 7-5 along party lines to approve the overall bill, sending it to the full Assembly for debate Thursday.
The measure would allow Wisconsin residents who pass firearms training to obtain permits to carry concealed handguns and other weapons in most public places.
The committee voted down a series of amendments to the legislation that Democrats said would fix its flaws. They included amendments that would ban guns in childcare centers, make it easier for property owners to keep guns off their land, and allow police officers to know which vehicles are owned by permit holders.
The Republican majority narrowly shot down all of them, including two that tied 6-6 after Rep. Suzanne Jeskewitz, R-Menomonee Falls, voted with the Democrats.
Committee Chairman Rep. Scott Suder, R-Abbotsford, said the bill already contained reasonable restrictions that mean only law-abiding citizens will carry weapons.
But Rep. Spencer Black, D-Madison, said the bill would allow concealed weapons in shopping malls, hospitals and churches, and make it hard for property owners to keep them out.
Can't believe Wisconsinstan will allow this to stand for long if, as it seems it will be, approved.
Expect lawsuits and full-court anti-gun press. The commies cannot violate rule one: First, take away all the guns.
You can certainly expect the hoplophobes to fight.
But that needn't mean that they will win.
Already posted HERENonsense.
Not only is that a posting of a different article (on the same subject true, but a different writer for a different news organization), it was posted ten minutes after I posted this one.
So give me a break.
"allow police officers to know which vehicles are owned by permit holders."
A thousand pardons oh snotty one.
I have read that Wisconsin amended their constitution to add the right to keep and bear arms in 1998. I would be curious to hear the state of laws prior to such passage and the legal consequences that have happened since.
A similar effort to amend the California constitution to add the right to keep and bear arms is to begin in a couple of weeks. Assuming that we get it to pass, it would be interesting to consider the recent history in Wisconsin as it might be a look into California's future.
California's legislature, I am sure, will drag its feet at repealing anti-gun legislation, but the courts will be mandated to set aside infringing laws. Is that what has been happening in Wisconsin?
