Ex-president Bill Clinton is arguing that tighter immigration laws are hurting America, saying the new restrictions aren't worth it even if they stop the "one out of a zillion [foreigners] who might have a bomb."
"I'm very worried that one of the consequences of our tightness on immigration and visas as a result of 9/11 and terror, has led to a drop in many places of the number of foreign students coming to the United States to study and be graduate students," Clinton told an audience at the University of Minnesota on Saturday.
He said the U.S. needed foreign students because "we are nowhere near graduating enough scientists and engineers to maintain, given the size of our economy, a leadership role in the global economy."
Clinton said the terror trade-off wasn't worth it.
"When we got real tough on visas - because one out of a zillion of them might have a bomb - we lost a lot of brains. We might have dodged a bomb but we lost a lot of brains."
On another subject, the former president also praised actress Geena Davis, star of the new ABC Show "Commander in Chief."
"I did see one episode of 'Commander in Chief'," Clinton told the crowd. "Geena Davis is good for two reasons. She looked tough but not macho. She didn't look lion-tough. And she spoke Spanish. So I thought those two things were good."
I sure have not lost any sleep over that. Who cares if they come here or not?
We are way overpopulated.
It's time for America's age of immigration to come to a close.
What a sorry scumbag.
Someone tell us again how this pompous gasbag ever became President of the USA????? And why won't he GO AWAY?????
Dane is an interesting sort of troll. He or she trolls from the *apparent* POV of sort of a hyper libertarian, open borders, anti national sovereignty, set of values. This trolling depicts a sort of supposed faction of the GOP that feigns to represent small business owners, day traders and other very individualist self made individuals. And certainly, all of those are good things. But what I wonder is, would it not make sense for the Left to try and disrupt the Right by injecting trolls specifically "engineered" to rile up Reaganites, paleo cons and Goldwaterites? By riling us up, and setting us against the moderates, it splinters the GOP. Never trust someone who comes here to disturb sh*&*
I think Dane is a DU troll. Here to sow discord. While it is difficult for far rightists like me to rile moderates with our positions, Dane comes in with a stereotyped, type cast, ultra libertarian "no rules so long as business benefits" position, guaranteed to rile the far Right. His objective? To slime the far Right and sow GOP discord.
What exactly does the United States need foreign brains for? We don't need any further immigration, especially from the Middle East, where trustworthiness doesn't come with the deal.
Maybe Dane is a Chinese agent. An emissary from today's Middle Kingdom
What immigration crack down?
If Dane is the best that the Middle Kingdom could get, maybe they aren't such a threat after all...
It'd be like having them hire Hank Hill to threaten our Strategic Propane supplies...
"I'm very worried that one of the consequences of our tightness on immigration and visas as a result of 9/11 and terror, has led to a drop in many places of the number of foreign students coming to the United States to study and be graduate students."
And that's a bad thing??? We already have more than enough foreign "students" to run all the 7-11s, Dunkin' Donuts, White Hens, Motel 6's, and cabs in the US now. We don't need more, they breed like rabbits, and we most definitely do not need more muslims from the Middle East.
"How is it that Carter and Clinton can't keep their ex-president mouths shut."
It's simple - they're democrats. And we all know that standard rules of comportment are for the "little people", not democrat bigwigs.
As for Clinton--the worst president America has ever had--once a traitor always a traitor.
What logic. Why not graduate more American scientists? Why not educate Americans in public schools rather than test to the lowest common denominator? Set high standards, and the brightest will meet the standards. Then everyone else can be "average."
Could he slip into a nice, quiet coma for a few months?
Carter's worst trait is his longevity. Bill looks sickly and Jimma appears likely to outlive him. That will give Jimma more years to shine the light on his ineptitude.
Stopping all those new Democrats coming over the border is not good for his party.
