Amazing. I really thought Kansas might rank up there, because, well during my 20 year stay here I've hit two and nearly missed a couple other times. On our trip back to Wichita from Texas Christmas last we counted 10-15 dead deer once we hit the turnpike in Wellington, some 30 miles from home.
The funny thing is that I've lived both in Michigan and Pennsylvania. I'm not a hunter so my viewing is limited to trail, backroad, and highway driving. But I've seen far more deer in MI than in PA. I have no idea why.
OK, we'll just send you about 50,000,000 deer from Pennsylvania, and then you CAN be number 1!
too funny...
There was a woman who used to work in the bar I frequent that has many deerhunters as patrons. She once said that she didn't have a problem with all deer hunters only the ones that left the deer on the side of the road. She also contributed five bucks to the Widow of the Unknown Soldier collection. True story. She was blonde.
The PA deer like to kick headlights in on parked cars.
So, does this mean there are too many deer in these states? Or these states have really lousy drivers? Or a combination of both?
Perhaps there are better marksman in Pennsylvania.
Believe it or not white tail usualy don't herd. You might see 2 or 3 does persued by a buck during rut but thats about it and the does you see together are usualy related, mother and daughters.
Constructive mischief.
I once read that Pennsylvania has "more highways" than any other state in the nation. That might explain why we're # 1.I have read the same thing about North Carolina. Don't know which, if either is right.
I don't know how the Carolinas escaped being on the list, seeing how we're sandwiched between VA and GA. But we've got more problems in the (sub)urban areas with the smaller critters here. My Nissan Frontier 4x4 bagged a bunch of opossums and squirrels in the first few weeks after I got it (and I wasn't aiming for them, honestly!)...
Living in the foothills of Northern California, it FEELS like we are in the #1 state. I imagine the cities skew things down a bit but I will tell ya, there are about 2 dozen carcasses lying along the 20 mile stretch of I-80 near my house.
I have hit one. It jumped in front of my Toyota pickup while I was pulling a boat at 5am and there was nowhere to go.
My wife hit one driving a Plymouth Voyager. In both cases, we were lucky because they hit low and did not come up over the hood. Both hits were at 55mph+.
Well #1 here... and none too proud of that.
More deer than people, I see them walking down the middle of my street! A suburb of Pittsburgh, less than 3 miles from downtown! Giant Rats! Need to seriously open up hunting way way way more..
I'm actually shocked we aren't number one either.
That's because in Wisconsin they're not considered "accidents" but, rather, an alternative hunting method. 8^)
I read that the state of Iowa was promoting the saying " DON'T VEER FOR DEER ".
It may sound corny, but here in Missouri several fatalities have occurred in head on collisions and single car accidents dodging deer.
DON'T VEER FOR DEER, better to pay a deductible than pay for a casket.
I'm sure your right about reduced population keeping numbers down here in Montana.
I've hit 3 of them and I am only 24. Hit them all in my old truck and never reported it. :)
and that was just living deer just waiting for a chance to jump in front of a car. Downright scary, because you never know when one of them is going to bolt across the road.
