Pennsylvania ranks first among the top ten worst states for vehicle-deer collisions

I'm in PA, and hit a deer two weeks ago. Well, actually the deer hit me... I was at a stop sign and it ran from behind a house - it tried to stop and it's butt slammed into my wheel and front bumper.

It caused $900 in damage - replace the bumper and control arm to the wheel (or something like that). It did not cause any body damage, but that's only because I have a truck - I'm sure if I had a car, it would have dented it up pretty good.

I've never hit a deer (yet) but I've seen the results of such a collision, and it's like hitting a brick wall. A good friend of mine was travelling through Wisconsin a few years back in a Aerostar van when he hit a buck at 55 mph. Totally destroyed the van, and he would have died if not for the airbag.

I was coming back on Route 252 from King of Prussia in mid-afternoon in a traffic jam and a deer jumped over my car. They are like squirrels here.

Good jumpers those deer! Unfortunately our deer were the slower lazier ones - didn't jump well

I have a box of "Roadkill Helper" in the pantry. I like to put it on the counter when we have company.

Having missed several on My run to /from work I can verify this. whole herds come out to nibble on the stubble after the final harvest. One came so close once it left a tuft of fur on My fender.

Greetings from sugar beet country,

get a jeep. plowed over one last year in my (slightly lifted) cherokee. no damage. couple blood smears and a few hairs on the bumper and skidplate was all.

Saw a deer get hit square by a semi on I 94 going 70+. It was wintertime BAM!, pink mist and then nothing, The semi ran over the jerkified remains, and kept going

I'm from MO, and they (dead deer laying off road) won't make it through a night there, either picked up by workers or coyotes drag off

Agreed. This time of year, I usually see 2 or 3 dead deer on the way to work, and by the time I'm heading home, they're already gone. I think that it's the road workers.

Recently, I've seen the remains of deer that must have been hit by semis. Nothing but about a 50' red smear on the highway.

So, does this mean there are too many deer in these states? Or these states have really lousy drivers? Or a combination of both?

It's the deer. Here in the KC area, they've had to open up bow seasons in local parks in some residential areas!

I saw a TV show that talked about the "proper" deer population, and I seem to recall they said that some areas around KC have more than three times the population than would be considered to be a healthy level.

They're all over the place here.

And when you're driving on the highway, they will run in front of your car, often giving you no chance to aviod them.

Friends in Alberta tell me that if you hit a moose - it's all over with - 1 in 10 that you will survive.

Møøse. Also known as a brick wall on stilts...

A few years ago, some buddies of mine were on their way up to a fishing camp in Canada, and they hit a moose with their van towing their fishing boat. Totalled the van and the boat, when it rolled, but nobody was seriously hurt. Just spent the night in the hospital. Later, once they got up to the camp, the next night there were microbursts, destroying the camp! I've never seen anyone so happy that their vacation was over!

She was a blonde, huh?

Friday is veteran's day. I think I will have to take up a collection for the widow of the unknown soldier at work.
