We have a moral obligation to be happy. God made people to be happy and nothing makes us feel more blessed than to share it with others. Being happy makes the world a better place too. There's the old saying a smile or a kind comment can go a long way. Its a priceless gift we should bless God for every day of our lives for our lives acquire through being happy, a state of grace as well as a more sublime character.

God made people to be happy?
I think the Bible disputes that claim.

Not the biblical god, but Mammon. From the analysis of the expression "I feel [or you look] like a million dollars" it necessarily follows that a dollar is a happiness measurement unit, and a rather small unit at that.

Look at the psalms - they're described as songs of ascension. It implies we have an obligation to be happy. God is the author of our happiness and the Founding Fathers Of America realized happiness is the key to goodness. After life and liberty, the pursuit of happiness is mentioned as a human birthright. When we have life and freedom, its not enough to complete our existence. We have a need to show delight in life even when it lets us down.

I think Job is a perfect example. After all he went through, he was still never rebuked God. And in that solace, we take with us to be thankful for what we have. That, in itself, makes us happy.
I guess if you're never thankful, you'd never be happy. Maybe that's the moral of the story.

Job's not available for comment, I'm afraid.
I see what you mean, and that's always been a problematic parable.
Happiness doesn't mean "freedom from pain."

The Bible and the Declaration of Independence are two totally separate documents, despite what Judge Roy Moore would like you to believe.

Rush Limbaugh writes that the world sets up obstacles in the way of happiness. Liberals act like no one deserves to be happy. If you watch the evening network news, you'd think the world was a horrible place and you should be mad at it. I hated what it did to me and I stopped watching it long ago found an inner peace and happiness I hadn't known in a long time. Hard as life is, I take the time to thank God for the opportunity to show my happiness for every thing He does for me. And I think life will get even better tomorrow.

The only reason I can think of that the bible gives for God making people is to glorify Him.

Job was a test case.... and all he lost was restored to him many times over.
However, I agree with you. God didn't make us to be happy; He made us to worship Him.

The Bible, and most especially the Catholic faith, is all about this life being meant for suffering and being tested. One cannot be happy when they are suffering. There is a big difference between not blaspheming God and being happy.

What makes religious oppression so insidious, especially in the case of Islam, instead of freeing the soul, it enslaves it to a bunch of futile rituals. So the very thing that the followers think is making them better, is actually making them worse. Its a case of the cure (Islam) being worse than the disease (man's fallen, sinful state).
Ephesians 2
7 That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.
8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
11 Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands;
12 That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world:
13 But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.
14 For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;
15 Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace;
