Democrats push prisoner abuse probe Leading GOP senator dismisses call for 9/11-style commission

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Senate Democrats stepped up their attacks on the Bush administration's handling of the war on terrorism and the war in Iraq with calls Monday for an independent probe into the treatment of prisoners in U.S. custody.
Republicans fired back, accusing Democrats of trying to score political points off American losses in Iraq and of undermining support for U.S. troops.
Leading Senate Democrats, arguing that the chamber's GOP leadership has not pursued investigations on those matters, said they would push to establish a panel similar to the independent commission that investigated the al Qaeda attacks of September 11, 2001.
"We need the support of people around the world in our war on terrorism," said Sen. Carl Levin of Michigan, the ranking Democrat on the Armed Services Committee.
"The activities both at Guantanamo and at Abu Ghraib have cost us a great deal in that support," Levin said. "We've got to be willing to take a good hard look at ourselves and not leave all these gaps."
Allegations that Americans have tortured prisoners have dogged the Bush administration since April 2004, when graphic photographs of Army reservists mistreating prisoners at Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison outside Baghdad became public.
Many of the roughly 500 prisoners inside the U.S. military prison at the Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, naval station have been held for more than three years without being charged or having access to a lawyer. Most were captured in Afghanistan. (Full story)
The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday agreed to hear the appeal of a former driver for Osama bin Laden, a Guantanamo detainee who is challenging the Bush administration's military tribunals for foreign terror suspects.

Start calling them traitors, then play tapes of their comments and make comparisons to previous wars.
It would be a very easy thing to remind America that Democrats are the party of terrorist's rights.
This would be a sure fire victory strategy for the Dems if only journalists, terrorists and Europeans were allowed to vote in US elections.
The RATS are just showing their true traitorous colors. They are in solidarity with the animals rioting in France.
Yo! DUmb@ss Rats!
You control NOTHING; and you are in NO position to demand anything. Pi$$ off, you farkin' traitors!
And how are they going to explain, when a terror attack happens, that we could have prevented, if we had gotten a little tougher with a terrorist prisoner in our custody?
I bet it will be "Bush's fault" for his inability to sweet talk the terrorist into telling us all about it.
...and the cash register at the the DNC goes cha-ching. The politicos (and Micheal Moore) know that moonbats and their money are soon parted.
Zell would give the rats hell and could get away with it where Rummy has his hands tied because of the jackels in the press !
Really in many ways that should be outrageous American people. If after being attacked and having so many American civilians die, the American public is so gullable and does so little to inform itself, the Dims are naturally going to use this to try to increase their standng.
The one fly in the ointment is that every 2 or 4 years, the public seems to gear up for elections, become better informed and vote more for GOP candidates. One might think the Dims would learn this, but their MSM echo chamber apparently prevents them from learning from elections any more.
I have just two words to say about the democrats actions:
Total Disgust
This inaction-to-reaction mentality of this party is so vindictive and reckless that it's hard to conceive that nearly half this country can still reason with this nonsense....For Christ's sake, you'd think a person with even an ounce of respect for his own intellect could identify this lunacy for what it is.
The democratic party will cause more deaths of Americans. Like they did in te Viet Nam era, they will by their constant pressure to wage war (really?) in the mold of political correctness. I know I'm former USMC (69-71) and have never voted for any democrat since--and never will.
