Ten days after quake, Pakistan said Ji Saab to $1 billion deal (Defense deals with quake aid money)

LONDON, NOVEMBER 7: Even as those who survived the October 8 killer quake struggle to rebuild their lives against the advancing winter, Pakistan, within 10 days of the quake, was moving closer to finalising a $1 billion defence deal for a Saab-Ericsson airborne early warning system, the latest issue of Jane’s Defence Weekly says.

According to the report, the Swedish company announced on October 18 that it had inked a provisional contract with Pakistan, envisioning the replacement of the Pakistan Air Forces’s F-27 Fokker planes. The deal was believed to be for seven aircraft, but final steps were yet to to be taken as the company was awaiting a nod from the US.

Two thirds of the $1 billion dollar contract are to go Saab for providing Turboprop aircraft, while the rest falls to Ericsson which is to provide the Erieye airborne radar.

Saab chief executive Ake Svenson was quoted by the weekly as saying that a number of outstanding issues remained to be resolved, but Jane’s said that it is understood that the deal was now close to being finalised.

The deal could lead to the selection of Saab’s multi-role fighter aircraft, the weekly said, adding that the purchase of these aircraft would provide access to datalink and command-control computers and communication capability.

The AEW systems to be supplied to Pakistan are to be primarily used for the continuous surveillance of its borders and of its air and sea territory.

Powered by two Allison or Rolls-Royce AE 2100 engines, the Saab 2000 can remain airborne for nine hours at 30,000 feet and Ericsson’s Erieye radar can effectively spot a fighter-sized target about 330 km away. Seaborne targets can be detected 320 km away when the aircraft is at optimum cruising height. —PTI

Pak reaches accord with US on F-16 delay

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and the US have reached an understanding which allows Islamabad to delay its purchase of F-16 fighter jets. According to Dawn daily, the decision was finalised at a meeting between Pakistan Ambassador Jehangir Karamat and US Assistant Secretary of State Christina Rocca on Friday. Karamat said the deal would cost Pakistan as much as $4 billion and ‘‘we felt that at this stage we need that money for the earthquake victims’’. The deal, which was to be referred to the US Congress, may now be delayed till the next congressional session, due to begin in January, Karamat said. Asked if the delay could extend to a year or longer, he said it was possible.—PTI

Maybe you could teach me some colorful Bengali words with which to express my sentiments towards Pakistan. The mods wouldn't know what I was saying so I wouldn't get time out.

You could freepmail me!

I know a couple of Bengali sayings:

A goat, what will he not eat? A madman, what will he not say?

When a girl is dancing on the stage, she shouldn't worry about her veil if she sees relatives in the audience. Or something like that.

Well this one is:
"Chagole ki na khai, Pagole ki na bole"

"When a girl is dancing on the stage, she shouldn't worry about her veil if she sees relatives in the audience."
(Dont know this one, will have to ask my mom if she has heard of it.)

From where did you learn these sayings?

One of my teachers was Bengali, and he didn't mince words.
The second was actually from the Mahabharat, so it couldn't be Bengali, now that I think of it.

It means, someone with no skin in the butt, keeps a name "Hari Krishna"(Gods name).

It describes a person who is:

Trying to do something far beyond his/her capacity.
Trying to buy(or possess) something way beyond his/her means.
Trying to pretend something he/she really isnt.
Trying to antagonise an enemy far bigger for his/her size.

And so on.....

Heheh. I wish I had enough brain cells to learn Bengali. There is a lot of Vaishnava poetry and books I could read in the original.

Well let me see. The whole world is pouring in aid to help their victims, and Mushy is asking for more from the international community including India that gave $25 million USD plus much more in material supplies (also opening up the borders to take inside some of the earthquake victims)

...... and yet they have a Billion dollars to spare to buy themselves weaponry?

It like, you running into financial troubles and want others to take care of your family, help raise your children while you just go on to buy a swanky new car.
What kind of comments would you expect?

In other words .....if they have the money then they should be spending it on the earthquake victims. Pakistan is complaining that it didn't get enough aid from the international community. Pakistan should realise that those victims are Pakistan's not the international community's responsibility.

The funny part is Mushy wants the same aid that Katrina/Tsunami victims got, what he doesnt realise is that Katrina victims paid taxes to the US government and it helped them in the times of their needs, Tsunami victims didnt go bombing the rest of the world and besides India helped its people with its own money.
Now within pakistan it would have been a different story if the earthquake had hit Punjab Province, Azad Kashmir sic! is treated the same as china treats tibet, a place to settle down the marginal population from other provinces.
Mushy is a snake anything said by him should be filtered through the concept Al Taqqiah, or better still make him take an oath on the oly Quran before you trust anything said by him. And frankly its getting irritating listening to his crap, the west(or the stakeholders) ought to be working on a plan which keeps both the Army (Mushy) and the Islamists out of the future of the region, anything else is like feeding the monster.
