Please read "Among the Believers: An Islamin Journey" by VS Naipaul. This book gives us an exellent idea of what modern Islam is all about (hint: it is not very different from 7th century Islam). Incidently, Naipaul won the 2001 Nobel Prize for Literature. He is brutally frank and honest; little wonder that most Muslims HATE his guts.

Have you read Beyond Belief: Islamic Excursions among Converted People, a later book of his? I've just run into it and it looks like a good companion read.
