Recent price per kilo (2.2 pounds) for heroin and cocaine, according to the Drug Enforcement Administration. Note that prices generally increase the farther drugs move away from South America. Also, purity declines the farther the drug gets from the source country.
Dominican Republic, Santo Domingo:
Cocaine - $12,500
Heroin - $28,000
Puerto Rico, San Juan:
Cocaine - $15,000 to $17,000
Heroin - $50,000 to $80,000
New York City:
Cocaine - $17,000 to $32,000
Heroin - $48,000 to $80,000
Hartford, Conn.:
Cocaine - $18,000 to $26,000
Heroin - $90,000
Pittsburgh:
Cocaine - $25,000 to $30,000
Heroin - $150,000 to $200,000
That's a little too simplistic.
Do you think it's just the direct cost of the junkie's daily habit that affects the rest of society? What about health costs, crime, murder, long term care for those who mush their brains. There is a social cost associated with drug addictions which wouldn't go away no matter if drugs were free.
The 1 or 2% of people who wish to mush their brains is not going to expand as a result of drug availability.
Alcohol, inhalants, heroin, cocaine, and etc, will all do the job of self-annihilation.
If that tiny percentage of people want to self-destruct, there is nothing short of totalitarian socialism will stop them.
Oh, wait - that's what some so-called 'conservatives' here would like.
Thanks for the link, quite an eye opener!

Mexico Discovers Islam
Referenced from: http://islam.com.mx ^ | Unknown | Michelle Al-Nasr
Mexico may be well on its way to a monotheistic revolution. This new trend is emerging from recent developments, and reflects a similar change evident in other South American nations - people are embracing Islam by the thousands, jettisoning the Catholicism imposed upon their ancestors in Spain.
The prayer congregation has tripled since Mexico City's Centro Cultural Islamico de Mexico (CCIM) first opened its doors 6 years ago. The numbers could be even higher. However, most Mexicans still have almost no knowledge of Islam. CCIM is spreading the Oneness of Allah at all levels of society and translating Islamic publications into Spanish. It also has several native-born active Da'wah graduates from Saudi Arabian universities who speak fluent Arabic. The Center's Islamic public radio program had to be suspended because of financial constraints.
In the last 3 years, CCIM built two new mosques in two cities close to the capital. Its ultimate goal is to establish full-time mosques in every major Mexican city.
