It took Mayor Richard J. Daley exactly one night to respond to the riots that followed the murder of Martin Luther King in Memphis TN on April 4, 1968. He directed the Superintendant of Police to issue an order to "shoot to kill any arsonists, or anyone with a Molotov cocktail in their hands, because they're potential murderers, and to shoot to maim or cripple anyone looting any stores in our city."

It worked. Libs and journos screamed "Boss Daley" - Chicago responded with thousands of letters of support for the Mayor and an overwhelming mandate when he next stood for election in 1971.
