I have unmarried friends who equate the pitter-patter of little feet with the screeching horror of bombs falling; who think a dirty diaper should warrant an EPA toxic site designation. When adorable babies cruise by in their strollers, the rest of the world may go all gushy, but these friends remain unmoved -- possessed only by the desire to get out of there before the stork drops a package on them as well.
These are friends who wish to remain child-free.
In our parents' era, this attitude would have immediately labeled them as communists or lesbians. (Come to think of it, my friends who have sworn off children are all heterosexuals.) Even now, the declaration to remain baby-free can result in all sorts of negative reactions, from "poor ignorant you" frowns, to "I wanna be a grandma" screams from your mother. People will likely assume you're selfish, stone-hearted or too dysfunctional to parent.
But we need to get over it; the numbers of non-breeders are rising. According to the U.S. Census, approximately 77 percent of unmarried women between 18 and 44 were child-free in 2002.
Still, you can't blame society for taking this 'tude. Up until recently, procreation was an assumed part of married life. You marry, you get knocked up -- in that order, it was hoped. I asked my mother several times about her decision to have four of us; she always laughed as she said, "What decision? It just happened -- all four times!"

I thank God these people don't want kids. Just Imagine a 2nd generation of these extremists.
???
Strange story to be found in a San Fransicko publication.
And what percentage of them are not breeding the next generation of DemocRATS?
In this case... I am glad she had no children... less libs.
Why do people in SF think anyone gives a rat's *s* about their sex lives? Do they ever talk about anything else?
Written by a true fag hag. The gay community calls us breeders.

Excuse me for being so naive, but aren't single women supposed to be child free?
LOL! Know the feeling.
How do 25-year-olds -- just coming out of kid-hood themselves -- know for sure that they never want kids of their own?
I knew with absolute certainty by the time I was 11. And now that I am nearing 50? Not one regret on that count.
If you are unmarried, aren't you supposed to be child-free? I mean, I fit into this catagory, but not because I hate children, but because I cling to this old fashioned notion that you have children after you get married.
Better to not have any children than to have chldren and not care for them well, abuse them, not love them, or worse.
LOL! What a thought ... single people with no children!
Darwin at work.
The selfish narcissism of these San Fransicko liberals knows no bounds.
Children are God's opinion that life should go on.
Better to be born than not, even if you have to deal with and overcome those things.
How many generations until this mutation is bred out of the line?
Give the childless couples credit for realizing that two parents with careers are not a recipe for well-behaved, stable offspring.
Honestly given that we have six billion people on the earth, and the population continues to expand, it isn't a bad thing that some people aren't popping out lots of kids. Were people in Africa able to show more restraint in child birth, we wouldn't see so much famine and war there.
It's about time. It's been fashionable to be pregnant, the last few years, and all kinds of people were having babies. I wonder what they'll do with their little accessories now, as the pendulum swings the other way?
..and then when those childless champs reach their sixties, they realize that their life is soooo empty! They leave only bunch of "possessions" and a stink behind them.
I had to quit reading. I could not stomach the rest of it. This "tude" in that area along with the accepted shorthand jornalism is an atrocity.
