GULFPORT, Miss. Immigrants who are doing much of the grunt work in the clean-up after Hurricane Katrina are often finding themselves working for free -- but not by choice. Thousands of Hispanic immigrant laborers are being stiffed in Mississippi. Sometimes their bosses disappear. Sometimes they are promised payment at a later date.
It's a violation of the federal labor law not to pay workers, but many of the workers are illegal.
One man who paid 12-hundred dollars to be smuggled into the U-S from Mexico after Katrina hit has been waiting six to be paid for eight days of dawn-to-dusk labor.
A subcontractor blames the process by which payments from the U-S Army Corps of Engineers are made. But an Army Corps spokeswoman says she's not aware of any problems.
Workers who aren't paid have two options. They can file a civil suit in state court or file a federal complaint.

Welcome to the land of slave labor...slave labor which, if not stopped will destoy our culture.
Illegal immigrants=no pay.
Maybe if they werent Illegal they could go to court and challenge it!
It is immoral to not pay the workers, but what should be done is to pay them and then turn them into Immigration Services.
It is almost poetic justice that they got stiffed. They are not immigrants at all, like the article tries to imply, but are nothing more than insurgents.
They really have no right at all to complain, since they broke the law by coming in.
This is very true.
Insurgent is the exact term that these people need tagged with. They are not immigrants at all, and illegal alien doesn't have the proper punch.
They are insurgents fighting an insurgency.
Or maybe it's a misunderstanding, illegals thinking it's the land where everything is free was actually the land where you work for free.
Maybe after crossing the border doesn't yield them what they want they'll go home?
You can pick up your check at the local INS office.
I'd like to add, the companies hiring these illegal laborers should be shut down as well!
you see it all the time in news clips
bad guy goes in to rob the convience store, the cash register is empty... they go bullistic because there is no money and start breaking things and sometimes hurting themselves, some even sue the store owners
Choice quotes on the matter of immigrants in the Bible many on here would find enlightening:
Deuteronomy 24:14
Do not take advantage of a hired man who is poor and needy, whether he is a brother Israelite or an alien living in one of your towns.
Deuteronomy 24:17
Do not deprive the alien or the fatherless of justice
Jeremiah 22:3
This is what the LORD says: Do what is just and right. Rescue from the hand of his oppressor the one who has been robbed. Do no wrong or violence to the alien, the fatherless or the widow, and do not shed innocent blood in this place.
Ezekiel 22:29
The people of the land practice extortion and commit robbery; they oppress the poor and needy and mistreat the alien, denying them justice.
Leviticus 19:10
Do not go over your vineyard a second time or pick up the grapes that have fallen. Leave them for the poor and the alien.
Zechariah 7:10
Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, the alien or the poor. In your hearts do not think evil of each other.
Deuteronomy 10:17
He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and loves the alien, giving him food and clothing. And you are to love those who are aliens, for you yourselves were aliens in Egypt.
I notice you leave out all the quotes from the Bible that tells us to obey the law.

Thanks for the posts. These commandments, such as they are, are the basis for a civilized community. In other words, failure to observe these laws reflect on us all.
Now if Dubya had of sealed the borders, these "sins" would not have happened ....so Yes, it's "Bush's Fault"
