If you equate genetic engineering to what happens in Darwinian evolution, you are missing the point of evolution.
Genetic engineering takes the inventions of evolution and moves them to new customers. It's truck driving, not design. The genes being copied from one species to another were invented by the Darwinian process of variation and selection.
