Milwaukee Vets Parade Bans Some Vets
Nov 2, 2005 2:46 pm US/Central

(AP) MILWAUKEE Organizers of the Milwaukee Veterans Day Parade scheduled Saturday have banned the local Veterans For Peace chapter from the event, saying the group's political activism violates the spirit of the parade to honor veterans.

"I will not allow anything political," Mary Ann D'Aquisto, president of Veterans Day Parade of Milwaukee Inc., said Tuesday.

She appeared at a news conference called by John Zutz, a leader of the local peace group, to denounce the action.

"You're trying to use our parade to further your political agenda," D'Aquisto told Zutz. "It's a political organization; not a veterans organization."

Zutz then grabbed an American flag and suggested that veterans carrying the flags in the parade also would be making political statements.

He said earlier that D'Aquisto and other organizers who voted to keep out his group were themselves politicizing the event.

"They are choosing which political statements are correct and which are incorrect," said Zutz.

D'Aquisto said the sole purpose of the parade will be to pay tribute to those who have served their country.

"I don't care what you think about the war, President Bush or gays in the military, all we want to do is honor the veterans," she said.

Good for them. That antiwar group has been trying to join in to disrupt the parade. A pro-veteran group is running this and these people want to join in to protest the war.

Thanks Mary Ann. Now go get a lawyer because you're bound to get sued over this.

So, carrying an American flag is also a "political statement", huh? I guess so to the anti-American, so-called "anti-war" movement!

I see the Veterans for Peace types in Boston from time to time with their knock-off garrison caps (trying to look like the American Legion). They are older guys, pre-Vietnam, probably peacetime draftees who did their two-years and never mentioned their service again until it became fashionable and exploitable later. Frauds.

"Now go get a lawyer because you're bound to get sued over this."

The good guys will win this one. 10+ years ago, the organizers of the St. Patrick's parade in Boston prohibited a homosexual group from marching in the parade. They got sued and after a long battle that went all the way to the Supreme Court, the parade organizers won. The organizers have a First Amendment right to select the content of the speech of their own parade. Incredibly, it was 9-0 and Souter (of all people) wrote the opinion. The name of the case, which I provide only because it is humorous is: JOHN J."WACKO" HURLEY AND SOUTH BOSTON ALLIED WAR VETERANS COUNCIL, PETITIONERS v. IRISH-AMERICAN GAY, LESBIAN AND BISEXUAL GROUP OF BOSTON.

"Veterans" for Peace kicked out. Good. They should try to keep this an all veteran event and send the "veterans" home to hit on their "momma," Crazy Cindy.
