London, November 3: The BBC harbours an anti-religious attitude, with its correspondents having little understanding of religious issues and soaps ridiculing religion, a parliamentary committee on the future of Britain’s public broadcaster has been told.

Representatives of the Hindu, Sikh, Christian and Muslim faiths-all broadcasters and contributors to British Broadcasting Corporation Radio 4’s thought for the day-gave oral evidence on Wednesday to the House of Lords select committee on the BBC charter review about the coverage of faith and the role of religious broadcasting.

The anti-religious attitude is apparent in the way religion is featured in the BBC’s entertainment output, said Chakravarthi Ram-Prasad from the Department of Religious Studies at the University of Lancaster.

He said BBC soaps “tend to use stereotypes-Christians are mad fundamentalists, Hindus are in arranged marriages”.

Referring to one such soap, Indarjit Singh, the editor of the Sikh Messenger and patron of the World Congress of Faiths, said, “Eastenders’ DOT cotton is an example. She quotes endlessly from the Bible and it ridicules religion to some extent”.

Singh argued the BBC should use its resources to educate people about religion in order to combat prejudice, saying, “the BBC should look at the removal of ignorance about religion”.

“We need to know and understand what essential beliefs are and how they contribute to society. The BBC should do a lot more of that. It is so easy in atmosphere of ignorance for prejudice to arise,” Guardian daily on Thursday quoted him as saying.

It really isn't actual ignorance of religion that the BBC exhibits, rather a strong sense of Dhimmitude. After all, how many Muslims are complaining about the BBC?

Eh, I've seen the BBC completely confuse the very fundamental beliefs of Christianity on the air. I mean, we're talking the very basics.

BBC isn't exhibiting ignorance of religion. They're exhibiting hatred and contempt of religion.

Notice that no complaints about Islam there. Perhaps because there isn't anything in BBC that may remotely critical to Muslims...?

They dont just stereotype the Hindus, they are downright anti-Hindus. Notice the rise in the number of racial attacks and hate crimes on Hindus and Sikhs in UK. They inherited it from the Muslims.

Did you see the article a few days ago about how a lot of the "elites" in the UK are converting to Islam? I didn't read it carefully, I wish I had. And Prince Charles is very chummy with Islam.

IIRC, it was noted that the "elites" feel a void in their empty frivolous lives. So they turn to Mohammedanism??? Like that's the only religious philosophy that can fill the void left by atheistic hedonism?

No I didn't but I am not surprised. I know Prince Charles wants Bush to learn about the virtues of Islam.

Meanwhile their BBC will carry on the anti-Hindu anti-India tirade.
