Mike Wallace Interviewed by Son Chris
Breitbart/AP ^ | Nov 03 , 2005 | DAVID BAUDER

Posted on 11/03/2005 3:13:00 PM PST by Liberty Valance

NEW YORK - Before arriving at a TV studio Thursday for an interview to promote his memoir, Mike Wallace had a feeling that hundreds of people who had sat across from him with the cameras rolling would find familiar.

"I was intimidated ahead of time, I have to say," he said. "Who knows what he really had in mind?"

His interrogator was his son, Chris. Their talk, taped for "Fox News Sunday," represented the first time father and son had crossed paths professionally in careers that together stretches three-quarters of a century.

For Chris, 58, it felt unusual primarily because cameras were rolling. Their personal conversations would often reflect a father-son rivalry, as they engaged in a sort of loving trash talk. Their expression for it was more profane.

Every fall before he started another year in college, Chris said his dad would put him on the spot asking how much money he needed.

"It was like being interviewed by Mike Wallace," he said.

When Mike, 87, walked in on a waiting Chris in the Fox News Channel green room, they warmly gripped each other's right hands. They talk frequently, but hadn't seen each other in months. Even Fox News Channel chief Roger Ailes stopped by to see this summit.

Dad still didn't give Chris the scoop, however: he'd already submitted to interviews on his book, "Between You and Me," with Katie Couric and Larry King.

As they waited for cameras to roll, Mike complimented Chris' tie. "You're wearing your $40 watch still," Chris replied.

During the interview, Chris Wallace said he often got e-mails from people who say, "you're just like your father," and they didn't mean it as a compliment. Does Mike Wallace understand why people feel a disaffection from the mainstream media?

I don't think Chris Wallace is conservative but I think he's certainly influenced by the conservative tilt at Fox News and does a better job of trying to be balanced than a lot of other mainstream news people of his stature.

I like Chris Wallace and think he is a great addition to Fox News. He has also said he didn't realize how biased other news organizations were until he started working at Fox.

He has done a lot of growing and does some really interesting interviews.

He asks questions of both sides.

That's important, whether you are a liberal or a conservative. IMHO.

Papa's 87 and his son hasn't seen him in months? I wonder what the family dynamic is like in the Wallace household....

I guess if it's something like 4-6 months or more, and they both live in the NE corridor, that's odd - at 87, Mike could be checking out any time now.

That reminds me - my dad's 70, and I haven't seen him in a few months...time to schedule a flight home....

I understand the two were estranged for much of Chris' childhood. Mike has been much married and well travelled. The relationship developed after Chris was an adult.

Good for you Yossarian. Makin' holiday plans myself to see the folks on the farm.

Every Friday at 3:06 pm Chris Wallace does a tease of his Fox News Sunday show with Howie Carr on WRKO in Boston.

The link goes to a live feed. It's always a hoot. Wallace is a very funny guy.

Major ego trip ping!

Who cares what Mike Wallace has to say? He's obviously incensed that his son is working for Fox News and believes that Fox is slanted.

Hilarious coming from an alphabet oldie.....who may or may not be coming to grips with the fact that the public is no longer in the grip of the MSM.

Perhaps, but he is a very poor substitute for Tony Snow, who he replaced. Occasionally I still have to turn off Chris depending on who his guest is, and how he approaches the interview.

But if Brit's scheduled to be on the panel......I'll usually hang in.

Aside from that last bit where Mike tells Chris that he loves him and is proud of him, I was thinking, 'Gee, if my dad was such a pr#$K, I'd not see him either!" That Wallace likes to hit below the belt. That snide "takes one to know one" to Carson was a cheap shot of the likes that I've not seen in a long, long time. His reaction to Chris calling him on that comment to Carson was astonishing. Evidently, this fellow has not one semblance of decency.

I agree.

I rarely miss that show, but was appalled that with the tornado coverage, the President speaking in Brazil, the riots in France, the SCOTUS nomination, the war, the senate shut down, plus various other actual NEWS, that they went ahead with that long, sappy, personal interview.

Nice smackdown by Brit Hume to Juan Williams regarding the Plame BS. Juan looked like he was going to cry.

I saw the interview last night. It was creepy, stemming from the obvious uneasiness each had with the other.

The part about Mike loving Chris at the end came up only because Chris surprised his dad with video of his new child (Mike's grandchild) and asked Mike what questions would he like to ask of the new baby. I got the impression that Chris was putting Mike on the spot because Chris would have liked Mike to come and actually see the baby and spend time with the family. Mike didn't know what to say other than that he loves his son and is proud of him.

It all seemed terribly contrived and yet awkward at the same time.

Mike did reveal his stupidity a few other times when he praised Margaret Sanger and said all reporters go into journalism because they are "patriots."
