The first paragraph doesn't seem to fit in with the rest. It's almost as if she feels obligated to insert it so lefties will read it.

I have to disagree with the idea that the U.S. has always been united in thought, however. We have the Revolutionary War, which required we force some states to cooperate; the Civil War, clearly a divided situation; civil rights, etc. You might say we're constantly divided, but manage to live together anyway.

Even during the revolution we ware not that "united". Many people in the states suppored the british, and fought for them.
Interesting thought though... we kinda have always been divided... but managed to make it.
