A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day
Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997.   Over 100,000 people have registered for posting privileges on Free Republic, and the forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.
A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day was introduced on June 24, 2002. It's only a small room in JimRob's house where we can get to know one another a little better; salute and support our military and our leaders; pray for those in need; and congratulate those deserving. We strive to keep our threads entertaining, fun, and pleasing to look at, and often have guest writers contribute an essay, or a profile of another FReeper.
On Mondays please visit us to see photos of A FEW OF FR'S VETERANS AND ACTIVE MILITARY
If you have a suggestion, or an idea, or if there's a FReeper you would like to see featured, please drop one of us a note in FR mail.
We're having fun and hope you are!

Florida and THE SOUTH have surely had their share of torment and problems as a result of Mother Nature the past couple years. Our resident satirist, JohnHuang2, who resides in Southern Florida has NOT missed the bullet and following Wilma’s visit, is awaiting power & ability to contribute with us again.

Needing a replacement for this Thursday, the Sistah’s wisely went to the deepest political thinker on the FRee Republic Forum, DollyCali (cough, cough, choke, choke …as a nose somewhere is growing)

Let’s see, shall we analyze Meir’s withdrawal? Reid’s most recent rants? The Scooter indictment? Charles & Camilla's visit to US? Alito’s selection for SCOTUS? POTUS trip to Asia? The 2000th death in Iraq? The de-throwning of Anne Coulter? The Condi 08 movement?

?????

Naw, let’s consider something REALLY important.

A baby squirrel.

Yes, this will be a hot bed of political discussion. Should survival of the fittest been permitted to happen? Will this woman, Debbie, be a wildlife law breaker and be charged with various violations of local statues? Will the libertarians have an opportunity to demand local ordinances as these be eliminated? Will Michael Moore make this into a movie? Who will play the baby squirrel? Who will play the wicked squirrel mother, who threw the squirrel out of the nest? Will the cancer ridden rescuer have her last days with cancer in jail? Will Hospice be permitted to visit? Will the dog breeders of America shout BAD WOMAN!? Will the baby squirrel now need therapy to realize he is NOT a dog? Will the dog pups no longer follow their nature & not chase squirrels? Will the Papillon Association of America with draw Giselle’s pedigree?

But the key question:

Will peace activists tell us that this is a lesson for the US & terrorists……

Cant we all just get along????

Well, wonder if any of us has any clue what will be the fate of Finnegan? Will he be content to play with the dogs? Will his inner instinct drive him to his “own kind”? Will he look for a mate in the dog world (pleasing the libs)? Will he work for the Park Service?

Or will his aspirations be a bit higher? Well, here is an idea….

Jim you are two days older than I am. big 6-0 for me on the 6th.. this is a MUCH harder one than the past.

Happy Birthday FRiend. Hope it was a good one. Sorry this one slipped by us. We could have done a birthday thread here at the Finest, as easily as a squirrel thread.

Hope you had a wonderful birthday, JimRob!
I can never forget how you took my Lurker's email back in April of 1998 and posted it, carefully crossing out my name signed at the bottom.

Since I'd been up very late and was asleep, my husband registered me as LadyX, so when I rose I was a bona fide poster, able to answer you and others!

It has opened a most delightful world, for which I am eternally grateful.

Love your profile page!!!! Not sure I had been there since you put up the "new project" you are working on.

I guess I had noted the composite that Billie made before but your posting on the thread with it separate for all else made it really stand out.

You should "borrow" the background for the Military Monday for your profile page. do you know how to do that? we could help you if not. Would look good.

I hope to do work like that on mine eventually

Pineapple upside cake is one of my favorites. My mom made it over the years & I should make it more.. well, maybe not as I would eat most of it, myself! Glad you had a nice birthday & that Chris took you out.. but what on earth is Teppanyaki????

Teppanyaki is a Japanese restaurant, where they cook your food right at your table, or, rather, the diners sit around the grill while it's being cooked. Lots of flames, smoke and fancy work with knives and salt and pepper shakers, etc. You get a great meal and a great show.

Well this birthday kid is plum tuckered out. Time to hit the hay. Goodnight.

Actually, I wasn't in the area or I would have enjoyed doing that.

This article refers to post #12 on the hippo/tortise. My friend John just sent it to me & I thought I would include it. Here is the url (which may or may not be around in days ahead.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/4152447.stm

Odd couple make friends in Kenya - Mzee and Owen

Mzee and Owen have become firm friends despite the age gap . A baby hippo rescued after floods in Kenya last week has befriended a 100-year-old tortoise in Kenya.

The one-year-old hippo calf christened Owen was found alone and dehydrated by wildlife rangers near the Indian Ocean.

He was placed in an enclosure at a wildlife sanctuary in the coastal city of Mombasa and befriended a male tortoise of a similar colour.

According to a park official, they sleep together, eat together and "have

become inseparable".

"Since Owen arrived on the 27 December, the tortoise behaves like a mother to it," Haller Park tourism manager Pauline Kimoti told the BBC News website.

"The hippo follows the tortoise around and licks his face," she said.

The tortoise is named Mzee, which is Swahili for old man.

Ms Kimoti said that if the 300kg hippo continued to thrive then in the next few weeks they would allow the public to see the unlikely pair together before they are separated.

The sanctuary, which is on the site of a former cement factory, plans eventually to get the help of the Kenya Wildlife Service to place Owen with Cleo, a lonely female hippo in a separate enclosure.

This is the latest in a series of unusual bondings in the wild that have surprised and delighted zoologists in Kenya.

In 2002, a lioness at Samburu National Park adopted a succession of baby oryx.
