Instead of a low flat tax, it proposes a high graduated tax. It retains pretty much intact the dysfunctional Internal Revenue Code. It does not entertain the slightest possibility of a national sales tax.

Great job, Republicans. So, how's that "limited government" thingie you've been promising for decades coming along . . . hmmmmm?

Maybe we need more commissions. While the Republicans keep ratcheting up the outrageous spending increases . . . . .

A waste indeed!!

A Taxreform bump for you all.

If anyone would like to be added to this ping list let me know.

John Linder in the House(HR25) & Saxby Chambliss Senate(S25) offer a comprehensive bill to kill all income and SS/Medicare payroll taxes outright and replace them with with a national retail sales tax administered by the states.

H.R.25,S.25
A bill to promote freedom, fairness, and economic opportunity by repealing the income tax and other taxes, abolishing the Internal Revenue Service, and enacting a national retail sales tax to be administered primarily by the States.

The extra revenue results from repealing deductibility of state and local taxes, ending tax-free health insurance supplied by employers and capping home mortgage deductions.

I'm no fan of the house price bubble which is popping as we speak, but to spike it into the ground with this proposal is absolute insanity. It will make the S&L crisis (accelerated by a tax law change) look like a walk in the park.

Bush is a dam phony ,this commission was a farce,we have been paying 400 dollars a month out of pocket to cover my wifes health insurance ,we then went into a health savings account which cut that amount in half but we have a 2400 dollar deductible and we can put 200 dollars away a month tax free towards the deductible or to pay for a doctors visit. Now this commission says that money we put away every month is now going to be taxable .They were supposed to make it easier not harder

Even Lord John Maynard Keynes, no supply-sider, said 25 percent is the highest acceptable rate.

Keynes isn't the model anymore, Marx is.

Novak is more of a reformer than anyone on that commission. What a waste!

I couldn't agree more but those who think this to be the end for REAL tax reform with this administration may just be in for a surprise or two!

Please remove the Kyoto Treaty from the list of Bush "accomplishments". That could not have been implemented even if Bush had staked his entire presidency on getting the Senate to pass it.

Pres. Bush has done some good things, but he also has failed to reduce federal spending.
Like it or not; President Bush is NOT a fiscal conservative.
His unwillingness to veto even ONE spending bill attests to that fact.

...and that huge federal education bill is a joke; (otherwise known as "No Child Left Behind".)

PING:

"What the panel came up with is hard to believe. The two options propose four and three tax brackets, respectively, with top rates of 33 percent and 30 percent, down from the present 35 percent. Even Lord John Maynard Keynes, no supply-sider, said 25 percent is the highest acceptable rate. The measly rate reductions were added belatedly by the panel, which intended to retain 35 percent until it found its plan generated enough extra money to make cuts and still keep the package revenue neutral, as the president requested.

The extra revenue results from repealing deductibility of state and local taxes, ending tax-free health insurance supplied by employers and capping home mortgage deductions. While largely leaving alone the Revenue Code's maze, the panel rips into three of the most popular tax benefits."

"The people who benefit from a such plans should realize they are in a SMALL minority."

On the contrary, if we were to get rid of the enormous drag on our economy that the current system represents, the rate of economic growth would increase enormously. Faster economic growth would benefit huge numbers of Americans. It would also lower both the federal budget deficit and the trade deficits, which are both enormous problems.

You obviously have done little research into the subject matter you comment on.

You're quite wrong.

Thank You. The MSM would never put together a list like that. I confess that I am very frustrated by the lack of progress on Socialist Insecurity reform and Tax reform and I had lost sight of some of these accomplishments so I really do appreciate the reminder.

"Socialist Insecurity" ...

Wonderful nomenclature - and an apt description!

"Please remove the Kyoto Treaty from the list of Bush "accomplishments". That could not have been implemented even if Bush had staked his entire presidency on getting the Senate to pass it."

Incorrect. You're thinking that the Senate wouldn't ratify Kyoto, but that's only part of the story.

After President Clinton signed Kyoto, he then signed an Executive Order that required all federal bureaucracies to behave as if Kyoto had been ratified. This meant that Defense Contractors had to live under Kyoto's quota emissions system.

President Bush unsigned Kyoto and repealed President Clinton's Kyoto Executive Order.

That's what killed Kyoto.

It may be a good idea.

But you'll never get a majority of people to agree that they should pay the same tax rate as Bill Gates.

Nor will you ever get people to agree that a new tax (i.e. federal sales tax) is a GOOD idea.

Unless you can convince a majority of people that the changes to the Tax System will benefit THEM and not Bill Gates (or the rich guy at the local country club) - you will NOT change the system.

Hate to point this out, but a majority of the people do not have to agree at all to paying the same rate as Gates - though there's certainly nothing wrong with that.

Presently many people suspect (or know) that some co-workers, neighbors, relatives, or acquaintances pay far less of a rate than they and also that those folks get preferential tax treatment due to the tax laws. The tax law should be such that everyone knows that no one else is getting preferential tax treatment.

The FairTax replaces all of the existing income, estate, etc. taxes so being a NEW tax isn't really an accurate picture as that implies to most people that it is an additional tax. It is not.

You final paragraph indicates you have done no research into the FairTax since it will clearly benefit most people.
