Judge blasts Blouin on abortion (Iowa Dems)

DES MOINES, IA - Agriculture Secretary Patty Judge criticized Democratic gubernatorial rival Mike Blouin on his anti-abortion stance, saying he is more extreme that many conservative Republicans.

Judge said that Blouin sponsored constitutional amendments that would have banned abortion, even in cases of rape and incest, while he was a member of Congress in the 1970s.

"These amendments show that Michael Blouin shares former Senator Jesse Helms views when it comes to a woman's right to choose," Judge said in a prepared statement issued on Monday. "These anti-choice amendments show that Mike Blouin is out of touch with the views of Iowa Democrats."

Abortion has been an underlying issue for the Democratic candidates for governor. All except Blouin are pro-choice, and have not sought to bring the issue into the debate. That changed with Judge's criticism on Monday.

"All Democrats need a candidate who will tell you they are pro-choice," she said.

Blouin has long opposed abortion, but said a Supreme Court decision giving women the right to obtain an abortion "is the law of the land.

"My campaign is not a discussion about the past, but rather about the future," Blouin said in a statement. "It is a reflection of my desire to deal meaningfully with the issues of health care, education and job creation."

Few were surprised by Judge's criticism of Blouin.

"It was only a matter of time before that issue was going to become part of the campaign debate," said Phil Roeder, a veteran Democratic activist who is neutral in the primary campaign.

U.S. Rep Jim Nussle and Sioux City businessman Bob Vander Plaats are both seeking the Republican nomination for governor, and both are opposed to abortion. Judge said pro-choice voters won't have a candidate if Blouin gets the nomination.

"The Democratic Party needs a nominee who will stand in stark contrast to Republicans like Jim Nussle," she said.

Mike Blouin served in Congress 1975-1978, when he was defeated by Republican Tom Tauke. Note how he has been trying to back off of his previous pro-life position. BTW, Patty Judge is a registered nurse.

I love this. So far the Republican primary has been fairly decent. I hope we don't resort to this.

Selfish woman, she should say "when it comes to a woman's unjust right to kill."

Maybe Blouin should consider becoming a Republican as so many other Democrats have. The Democrat Party has left him as it previously left Ronald Reagan.

Meanwhile, the Democrats of Iowa are now exhausted. I look forward to a solid Republican and supporter of Western Civilization like Iowa's next governor Jim Nussle presiding over a state that is less than one hundred miles from where I live. When the time comes, perhaps Governor Nussle will be able to relieve America of Tom Harkin by defeating him.

From what I've observed, she's a certifiable bit— Oh, nevermind.

Blouin may be pro-life, but anything remotely resembling a Conservative ends there. According to the ACU, his voting record was identical to Tom Harkin's (also elected in '74), and had a lifetime rating of 10% Conservative. I certainly hope we don't have to wait until the end of Nussle's 2nd term in 2015 to see that Socialist psychopath Harkin defeated. Hopefully Steve King will be able to take out the trash in '08.

I did not suggest that Blouin be elected to office but rather that, if his being pro-life caused his rejection by Demonrats, that he might consider becoming a Republican.

The other GOP candidate is Bob Vanderplats, who is a bit more conservative than Jim. I think they will behave themselves. There is a strong possibility that either could win next November.

Unless Blouin has dramatically changed his beliefs on everything else, there would be little reason for him to switch parties. As you well know, that destructive little twerp from Cleveland, Kucinich, until recently was pro-life, but he certainly would've been no gain for us if he switched. Even by Iowa standards, Blouin still makes Jim Leach look like a John Bircher.

OK, I am convinced. Blouin, if he has an ounce of sense, should check into the FieldMarshallDJ/Black Elk Clinic for recovering leftists. We have to at least give him credit for being attacked as a pro-lifer.

The question is, what would Blouin do about the issue as Governor ? Would he play down his views or would he turn into a Governor Bob Casey, Sr ? (Who probably had more courage on the issue that quite a number of Republicans -- and probably one of the few Dems I believe won't (or didn't) go to warmer climates after assuming room temperature).
