Did anyone else hear this segment of Hewitt's show? He absolutely tore Sanders to shreds. Sanders literally could not respond, although Hewitt gave him every opportunity.
I've read and listened to Sanders for 20 years. He has made a career of being a race baiting lightweight, which plays well on NPR. My thanks go to Hewitt for calling him on his hypocrisy.

It was particularly sweet when Hugh invited him back tomorrow so Sanders could have time to think up his response.

Beating to death an inacticulate kook was a bit of a bullying exercise by Hewitt. I did not find favor with it. Let him take on those who are more closely his intellectual equals. Not everyone can manage to secure a JD from the University of Michigan.

I listened to Hugh for a few weeks when he first came on up here, and wasn't hooked. I really only continued because RonDog here liked him so.
But then I heard him interview this aide to Gray Davis. He was polite, but he was absolutely bare-knucks -- asked him great questions, and didn't take s#!+, if you'll pardon my French. (I remember one point where he exclaimed, "Oh, come on -- do you think my listeners are STUPID?")
He is simply the best interviewer going; I honestly can't think of a better.
And I'm hooked now. Even though he ignores my blog!

Sanders is not, in general, inarticulate. Hewitt's insistence that he support his statement, or at the very least, provide an example is what drove him to the point of incoherent babbling. IMO, that's not bullying.

Hewitt verbally punched the guy, again and again, and he was just sitting there, like a deer in headlights. He had no tools at all. It was an embarrassment.

Yes--Sanders deserved to be embarrassed. Should his KKK assertion have gone unchallenged?

You have made clear, Mr. Saunders, that you are unwilling to name anyone that Bush was considering as more comfortable in white as opposed to black robes. Thank you for your time. Call me back if and when you are prepared to name names, and explain why, and we shall chat again. Have a good evening.
See how easy that is?

Yes, and that's almost a verbatim recap of Hewitt's close. He had to get to that point first.
This was a conversation. As such, Sanders's hypocrisy, coupled with his own occasional jabs, grew over time.

It was the 10 sanguinary minutes before of a nausiating repetition of Hewitt unchallenged pugilism that was the rub. It went on for about 8 minutes too long. Maybe Hewitt had nothing else as a backup for the Saunders time slot. The moral of that story, is always have a back up.

I was listening to that interview. The man writes for a major metropolitan news daily. He had to know that what he said was not much different from making watermelon jokes about a black nominee. He had to know he was going to take some heavy flak for that. If he can't come up with any better answers than he was giving Hewitt, he deserves to get bitchslapped live on a national broadcast. And Hewitt's a nice guy. If Hewitt can bang him around like that, God help him if he goes on with anybody else.

Hewitt is or should be a national treasure. His scorcher with "Jim-Bob JumpBack Jr" was a "whooping", justly deserved, but a rare one, because Hewitt is too class an act for spanking every fool he runs into.
Hewitt is genius. A remarkable ear and eye for "key facts" and an opinion leader's knack for bringing out the best in great people. Ok! So he is a damn smarty pants!
Learn to love it.
