I think it's always been called the SF-Oakland Bay Bridge. I just was looking it up and much to my surprise they are building a new one. The old bridge is scheduled to be demolished in 07. That's amazing to me since it's such a huge structure. Known to many outside the bay area as the boondoggle by the bay, the costs of this little charm skyrocketed after SF and Oakland Mayor Brown(s) scuffled over design. Old bridge is being replaced due to the seismic instability of the double decker design and inability to cost effectively retrofit.
