Iraqi police trainee missing in Berlin
An Iraqi police officer attending a training course in the German capital has been missing since Monday, the Interior Ministry said Friday.
Police have been searching for the 32-year-old, whose name was not released, since he was reported missing from the fenced and guarded compound in Berlin where his course was being conducted, ministry spokesman Bruno Kahl said.
The man's disappearance was not believed to be related to terrorism, and the government suspects he will return voluntarily by mid-December when his class is due to finish, Kahl said. The group is then expected to return to Iraq.
The European Union is training some 770 high-ranking Iraqi police in 21 courses around Europe. Two courses, with about 80 participants, are taking place in Germany.
All participants have been thoroughly vetted and have the proper visas to be in the country, Kahl said.
