Washing fruits/veggies not foolproof against illness

Snip: As consumption of healthy fruits and vegetables rises in Canada, the number of cases of food-borne illness linked from produce has also increased, partly because microbes can't always be washed away.

In Ontario, more than 500 people were stricken recently with salmonella poisoning after eating contaminated bean sprouts. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency reports 15 outbreaks of illness due to contaminated produce between 1991 and 2000.

Public health officials try to find a balance between touting the benefits of eating fresh produce and alerting people to its potential harms. Strawberries, green onions and pre-washed salad mixes have been implicated in recent North American outbreaks of hepatitis A, E. coli and salmonella.

The original source of contamination may be animal manure or human feces that are introduced in the field either in Canada or abroad, wash tanks, at the grocery store or in the kitchen. Washing produce with running water helps, but some pathogens can be absorbed into the cells.

On the contaminated-imported vegetable subject, Dr. Bill has said several times that the only way to kill those germs is to spray your food with the common Peroxide, then a spray of vinegar.

LOL, he never says and then wash them in running water, but I am sure he intends for us to do so.

He has also insisted for years that all kitchen dish clothes and sponges, be put in the microwave, soaking wet, until they steam.....says that is the only way to kill the germs that collect in them.

Which reminds me, I waited years to hear him say recently, something that I felt was true.

He says to not cook food in the microwave, in plastic of any kind.

Plastic is a petroleum based product and a little of it comes off when heated.

Microwave in glass only.

I haven't eaten strawberries since I used to pass the fields in southern Orange County where I saw the "people doing what Americans won't do" picking strawberries everyday. No bathroom facilities and pretty dirty looking.

I used to grow them myself when I lived by the beach. I may try again here now after winter. I used to get a vegetable wash at Trader Joe's in California that was pretty good.

There were outbreaks several years ago, people getting sick from cantaloupe of all things. You would think you were safe there, but when cutting through them the knife passes the salmonella or whatever from the rind right into the fruit.
