11-28) 11:46 PST OAKLAND -- An early morning fire gutted one of two
convenience stores where a group of men in suits and bow ties
trashed merchandise last week while denouncing the merchants for
selling alcohol to African Americans.
The fire at the New York Market at 3446 Market St. was reported at
1:19 a.m. today and was contained within about 15 minutes,
authorities said.
Oakland police are investigating whether the fire was arson, said
police spokeswoman Officer Danielle Bowman.
"However, it is too early to tell whether or not it is related to last
week's vandalism," she said.
One fire official said flame accelerant had been detected at the fire
site.
