Mall Suspect: 'Just Follow the Screams'

By CURT WOODWARD, Associated Press Writer

TACOMA, Wash. - A man accused of a shooting spree at a crowded
shopping mall told authorities to "just follow the screams" when he
called them shortly before opening fire with a pair of assault weapons,
according to court documents released Monday.

Plans for making bombs and the poison ricin were later found after a
search of the man's car and bedroom, prosecutors said. Dominick
Sergio Maldonado, 20, was ordered held on $2 million bail after
pleading innocent Monday to multiple charges that included
first-degree assault.

Blood Debt Women Offered Up For Rape
The Telegraph (UK) ^ | 11-22-2005 | Isambard Wilkinson

Blood debt women offered up for rape

By Isambard Wilkinson in Sultanwala
(Filed: 22/11/2005)

A village council in Pakistan has decreed that five young women
should be abducted, raped or killed for refusing to honour childhood
"marriages".

The women, who are cousins, were married in absentia by a mullah in
their Punjabi village to illiterate sons of their family's enemies in 1996,
when they were aged from six to 13.

The marriages were part of a compensation agreement ordered by the
village council and reached at gunpoint after the father of one of the
girls shot dead a family rival.

The rival families have now called in their "debt", demanding the
marriages to the village men are fulfilled.

The case is becoming a cause célèbre in Pakistan, pitting tribal mores
against a group of modern-minded, educated women. Amna Niazi, the
eldest of the five at 22, is taking a degree in English literature, while
both her sisters want to attend university.

Their fathers are supporting them and have refused to hand them
over, leading to a resumption of the blood feud, with two relatives
shot recently and 20 people arrested, while promises of further
retribution and murder abound.

In addition to the sentence on the women, the village council has
sentenced to death Jehan Khan Niazi, the father of three of the
women, and the fathers of the other two for failing to honour the
supposed bond with men whose identities they are not even certain of.

The women have said they will commit suicide if their fathers obey the
council.

Speaking at their home in Sultanwala, a remote cotton and
sugar-cane growing village, Amna said: "It is a great injustice that
should be ended. Why should we pay for a crime committed by
someone else? We will commit suicide if it happens. We would be
treated like animals by them. Our misery would never end as this is
just another way of using us as tools in the feud." None of the women
has so far been able to marry as their childhood "marriages" hang
over them.

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan condemned the "barbaric
custom of vani", - the tradition of handing over women to resolve
disputes - and called on President Pervez Musharraf to enforce a ban.

Last year a three-year-old girl near Multan was betrothed to a
60-year-old man in a similar settlement. The case led to parliament
passing a law banning vani and honour killings, but it has been widely
ignored.

I have heard a new ad on the radio several times.

It is for renting Safe Deposit Boxes, in a Private Vault, they say that you do not need identification, and there is no way to trace it back to you.

The boxes will be available 24 hours a day.

I assume the police have an employee working there, or are parked across the street.

Caribbean: Islamic radicalism on the rise?
Intelligence Summit ^

Posted on 11/22/2005 3:03:44 PM PST by Alex Marko

Caribbean: Islamic radicalism on the rise? POLICE used an excavator
to dig up the floor of an office adjoining a mosque near Port of Spain,
Trinidad's capital, in a search for weapons. The dig was fruitless, but
elsewhere in the mosque complex they found a gun, a grenade and
ammunition. On November 11th they charged the mosque's imam,
Yasin Abu Bakr, with firearms offences. He already faced charges of
sedition and a retrial for conspiracy to murder. Six other mosques
were raided, though nothing more was found.

Rather than Islamic terrorism, Trinidad would seem to be facing a
simple crime wave, albeit a worrying one. Mr Bakr is an ex-policeman
formerly known as Lennox Phillip. He leads Jamaat al Muslimeen, a
group of mainly Afro-Trinidadian converts to Islam. In 1990, they
staged an attempted coup, holding the prime minister and parliament
at gunpoint. Mr Bakr vigorously denies claims that his followers carry
out extortion, kidnapping and drug trafficking. His latest arrest was
triggered by an end-of-Ramadan sermon saying that blood might flow
if Muslim businesses refused to pay their annual tithe to his mosque.

With a booming oil and natural gas industry, Trinidad & Tobago is
more prosperous than much of the English-speaking Caribbean. It is
also less violent. But the gap is closing: the murder rate has climbed
to one a day. Five small bombs in the capital since July have added to
the panic. Some 15,000 joined a march against crime last month. “You
have failed us,” newspaper advertisements by civic groups tell the
prime minister, Patrick Manning.

Many of the factors behind crime, such as the cocaine trade, violent
youth gangs, and poor policing, are common to other Caribbean
islands. The government is spending $400m—3% of GDP—on patrol
boats, helicopters and coastal radar to staunch the flow of drugs and
guns.

The complicating factor is race. Trinidad's population of 1.3m is split
roughly equally between the descendants of African slaves and those
of Indian indentured labourers. Indo-Trinidadians blame crime on
blacks. Their leader, Basdeo Panday, says Mr Manning's government
is “part of the crime”. In office until 2001, Mr Panday proposed police
reforms. Now he blocks them. On November 14th, politicians from
both sides began talks on the crime wave. Trinidadians will doubtless
hope these result in more than a blame game.

SF: Minivan driver shot to death on Silver Avenue -
88th killing of year
SF GATE ^ | 11/22/05 | Stacy Finz and Rachel Gordon, Chronicle Staff Writers

Posted on 11/22/2005 11:11:20 PM PST by BurbankKarl

A motorist driving his minivan along Silver Avenue in San Francisco
was shot to death Tuesday afternoon -- the city's 88th killing of the
year, tying the 2004 total.

Last year, when the number of homicides surged, Mayor Gavin
Newsom said on a radio call-in show that if the rate of killings
continued people should start a campaign to recall him. He said that
he himself might even sign the petition. His staff called the comment
"tongue in cheek.''

But on Tuesday he was called on his words. Newsom responded that
he had been talking about curbing the city's gang violence, which
police say has significantly gone down this year. Authorities blame
some of 2005's numbers on everyday troubles beyond their control --
domestic violence, infanticide and mental illness.

"The reality is, we have had crimes this year that follow no traditional
patterns,'' Newsom said. "The efforts that we've maintained around
gang-related homicides, particularly in the African American
community, have paid dividends this year. There's been substantial
reductions, but again they're still unacceptably high and I'll continue
to fight to do more and to do better.''

On Tuesday, at about 12:30 p.m., his street was the scene of the
city's 88th killing. A motorist, whose identity was not released, was
shot to death while driving his minivan on Silver. His passenger was
also shot and taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries,
said San Francisco police spokeswoman Maria Oropeza. The suspects,
three men in their late teens or early 20s, ditched their van in
McLaren Park and fled on foot, Oropeza said. They were still at large
as of Tuesday night.

A Q Khan was in CIA pay since 1975!
NewKerala.com ^ | 21 Nov 2005

Posted on 11/22/2005 10:47:11 PM PST by F14 Pilot

New Delhi: New evidence has emerged to suggest that Dr. A.Q. Khan,
the father of Pakistan's nuclear program, was in the pay and
protection of the Central News Agency (CIA) in the United States since
1975.

According to a report appearing in The Tribune newspaper, former
Dutch Prime Minister Ruud Lubbers, is named as the source of this
startling, but unimpeachable source of information.

Speaking in interview with VPRO Argos Radio on August 9, 2005, Dr.
Lubbers revealed that Dr. Khan was first arrested in 1975 for
espionage and again in 1988 for entering Holland illegally. Lubbers
said that on both occasions, he was set free after the CIA intervened.

The paper further goes on to quote Dr. Lubbers as saying that in 1992,
Dr. Khan wanted to visit Holland to see his ailing father-in-law (his
wife is a Dutch). The case for visa was sponsored by no less a person
than the then head of the Dutch secret service, BVD, Arthur Dokters
Van Leeuwen.

Dr. Lubbers also confirmed that a BVD person received Dr Khan on his
arrival at Schipol Airport. The BVD was presumably acting under
instructions from American intelligence agencies.

“If you were to study the archives, you would find that the American
intelligence agencies - I am absolutely certain of it - kept a record of
how closely they watched the man and what he was upto, etc. They
thought as such they were doing a terrific job,” The Tribune quotes Dr.
Lubbers as saying in his interview with VPRO Argod Radio.

When the interviewer pointed out that Khan was allowed to continue
his activities in spite of the information about his clandestine
activities, Dr. Lubbers replied, “Yes, but that is the shortcoming of the
management. And yes, that's when we saw it was the leader of the
free world. And we do take quite seriously the fact that they did a lot
of good things. But they were not able to subdue the monster of
proliferation, to put it that way.”

He, however, said that the Dutch secret service was very prompt in
informing the CIA about Dr. Khan's nuclear proliferation activities, but
was clearly told to let him be.

“The BVD reported it to its counterpart in Washington. The counterpart
in Washington then follows a course that amounts to let him go and
we will gain more information. And that is where things start to go
wrong.”

According to the paper, the latest report from Vienna talks of the
International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) informing its Board of
Governors that Iran had turned over to the IAEA fresh documents that
give details, for the first time, about technology that Iran was offered
in 1987 by Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan of Pakistan.

According to this report, included in the engineering drawings and
other technology offered to the Iranians were diagrams about how to
form uranium metal into “hemispherical spheres”, a description that
would suggest the basic steps toward creating bomb cores. Such
spheres are needed for the Hiroshima type of atomic bombs.

It is to be noted that this cooperation from Iran has come about after
the September 24 IAEA resolution. In the previous 30 months of
investigation and inspection by the IAEA, Iran did not produce similar
evidence. The new documentation will reveal that Dr Khan's
proliferation started as far back as 1987.

U.S. and British authorities, including President George W Bush, Prime
Minister Tony Blair and former CIA chief George Tenet, claimed that
Dr Khan's activities came to their notice only around 1998 and they
busted the Khan proliferation ring in 2003.
