WESTERLY - Emergency management officials are still looking into why 10 local supermarket employees were sent to Westerly Hospital Tuesday, after what may have been exposure to an unknown chemical shut down the store for four hours and drew emergency crews from as far as New London, Conn.

Hazmat incident clears hospital
Firefighters arrived at the hospital at about 10:15 a.m. on reports that a small glass bottle of Buckley’s Formocresol, a highly combustible material, was dropped in a dental clinic exam room. The exposure to the substance sent 41 patients and three staff members to the hospital’s emergency room for symptoms ranging from eye irritation to scratchy throats — 15 had contaminated clothes, 12 received breathing treatment, and two received eyewashes, according to a statement released by the hospital.
