Brotherhood campaigners have been given unprecedented freedom The Muslim Brotherhood says it has won at least 33 seats in the first round of national assembly elections in Egypt. Initial results announced at some polling stations following a round of run-off voting on Tuesday indicated similar gains.
If confirmed officially, the results would more than double the seats held by the Islamic political group.
The organisation is banned in Egypt but tolerated by the authorities and fields electoral candidates as independents.
Opposition candidates again alleged that there had been widespread fraud by President Hosni Mubarak's governing National Democratic Party.
A Brotherhood spokesman said the group's performance, apparently winning a fifth of seats, "confirms in an unquestionable way that the Egyptian people stand behind the Brotherhood and that the Brotherhood really do represent the strongest social and political group in Egypt".

Snip: The respected leader of a Rainier Valley mosque was arrested Monday on an immigration charge, surprising those who knew his work in Seattle's Somali community. Federal agents with the Joint Terrorism Task Force arrested Abu Abrahim Sheik Mohamed at Sea-Tac Airport as he got off a domestic flight, federal criminal justice sources said.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokeswoman Lorie Haley said only that Mohamed, 37, was "in custody on immigration violations" and is being held at the Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma.

Snip: Under little-noted rulings over the last three years, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has allowed meat processors to use small amounts of carbon monoxide to maintain the red color in fresh meat sold in pre-assembled or "case-ready" packages.
Such packages are airtight containers assembled with the product at meat-packing plants and are not made to be reopened until they are sold to consumers. Some packages are marketed for up to 35 days, or 28 days in the case of ground beef.

FAA orders fuel tank retrofits to prevent explosions
Snip: The federal government told airlines yesterday they will need to retrofit thousands of passenger aircraft to prevent fuel tank explosions like the one that brought down TWA Flight 800 off the coast of Long Island.
The 152-page proposed rule issued by the Federal Aviation Administration comes after months of wrangling within the U.S. Department of Transportation, the FAA's parent agency, over the cost to the airlines - estimated to be $313 million to retrofit 3,200 passenger planes over the next seven years.
