More than 40 Catholic colleges were represented on Saturday at a conference that was billed as the nation's first on how gays and lesbians fit in at universities guided by a faith that says their sexual orientation is wrong.
But rather than lamenting the Catholic Church's stand on homosexuality, the two-day "Out There" conference at Santa Clara University showed that plenty of gay-related scholarship and student affairs planning is going on in Catholic higher education, said co-organizer Linda Garber.
"It's important and interesting to know there are Catholic universities that have offices and staff people specifically geared toward LGBT concerns," said Garber, director of the women's and gender studies program at Santa Clara. "There are a lot of people out there who are teaching (LGBT) studies without a national professional organization, a newsletter or anything."
The conference drew about 150 people, most of them faculty and administrators who deal with gay subject matter or students. Topics included "Curriculum and Same-Sex Marriage in a Jesuit University" and "Can I Be Gay and Catholic?"
The continuing tension was demonstrated into the oft-repeated anecdote that Notre Dame University has had an active gay and lesbian student group for years, but the college does not recognize or provide financial support to the organization.
One sign of how far the universities have come in openly addressing gay issues is that the dean's office and campus ministry at Jesuit-run Santa Clara provided money for the event, while the school's president sent a welcome letter to participants, said Lisa Millora, assistant dean for student life.
"There are a lot of people who subscribe to Catholic values as they relate to academic work, but don't necessarily agree with how the Catholic Church carries out its work," Millora said.
Among the universities represented at the conference were Georgetown, Loyola Marymount, Gonzaga, Fordham, DePaul, Boston College, College of the Holy Cross, La Salle, Marquette and Emory.

Well, the good news is that we couldn't afford most of these place anyway :-).
Homosexuals should be given support and encouragement to lead chaste lives, if these colleges truly cared about them. The Church and its colleges have no right to adopt the gay activist ideology which is inimical with the teachings of the Catholic faith. Shame on these colleges!
Isn't Jesuit pretty much a synonym for rabid queer activist these days?
Then find another church, and stop wrecking this one.
The bad news is that these schools are using the money donated to them by previous generations of patrons to advance causes that are 180 degrees opposite of their intentions.
Yes, that is bad. It's bad that our state universities are using our tax dollars to do the same thing. Sometimes a person just has to make bad jokes to keep from screaming and throwing things :-).
what world did I wake up in?
Next time Roman Catholics make fun of Anglican Catholics for our weak sisters, remember this, thank you.
In seriousness, the concentrated and repeated attack --- from within and without --- on all the catholic and large protestant denominations is obviously no coincidence.
Just compare the "good list" with the "bad list." On the latter are all the schools that have been supported over the years by tuition payments and special collections for which poor Catholic immigrants handed over their hard-earned dollars. It is EVIL that these institutions scorn the teachings of the Church--and not just the teachings on homosexuality. Wonder what the Mormons would do if Brigham Young came out against their church's teachings?
Ya know, I keep forgetting which line it was in the Bible where God approved that life choice. Remind me and I'll be sure to mark it.
Boston College and Notre Dame do not have Gay Groups on campus. Please note which two Catholic colleges remain in the Top 25.
Yep, you might also add - anti-free market, anti-American, and anti-Catholic.
They announced another priest in Boston was finally pulled out of his parish for his...ahem...extra-curricular activities with a minor in Las Vegas (I don't know the sex of the minor - I only heard part of the report) - apparently it took some 20 months to get him out. Of course, he denies doing anything wrong.
One of the (conservative) brothers in the Marianist order tells me it's rife with homosexuality. As in, "most."
Thats why I'm not a Catholic.
You're right, God does not approve of that life choice. Do you work on the sabbath? Eat pork or shellfish? God has as much to say about that as he does homosexuality.
CHIP (A new freshman): Hi, this is my first day here!
Billy (behind the table): Oh! That's just great! Please take one of our brochures.
CHIP: OK. Hey, there are two guys kissing on this? What the heck?
Billy: We are here to give everyone the right to live the way they want. Gay people are just like anyone else! We have feelings and love each other. I could explain this to you later over a beer if you like? (smiling)
CHIP: Dude! I've never met a gay guy before but don't you let a guy stick his pecker up your butt then stick it in your mouth?
Billy and others behind the table: Oh my God! You can't say that! Oh no! You are insensitive and hateful!
CHIP: Yea, sure. I'm sensitive enough to know I don't want a pecker stuck up my rear.
Bill and others: What do we do? Call the police! This is hate!
CHIP (later, in Father Johnson's office): Hey, I just told them what they do. What's the big deal? It's true and it's gross!
Father Johnson: You cannot talk that way! You must show tolerance. We cannot point at others the way you did and be critical. You were hateful and wrong! Sinful! They love each other just the way everyone else does.
CHIP: Uh huh. Sure Father. If I recall correctly even Jesus got a bit miffed at the Pharisees and Jesus was not to fond of Satan. So even Jesus got a little hacked off sometimes. And what about the "go forth and multiply" in the Bible? What about Sodom? God wasn't too "tolerant" in that case?
Father Johnson (laughing): You have a lot to learn son. Maybe we could go somewhere and have a beer and talk about this? (puts hand on CHIP's thigh).
CHIP: Crap!
Well, they effed up the priesthood by making it way too comfortable for homosexuals. So now they want to take down the colleges, too? Pope Benedict, HELP!
"Ya know, I keep forgetting which line it was in the Bible where God approved that life choice. Remind me and I'll be sure to mark it."
Somewhere after He restored Sodom & Gomorrah, I think.
